MEDIA GUIDE IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 Welcome from IAAF President / Sebastian Coe Welcome to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, which brings the IAAF’s flagship event to the Middle East for the first time. We are delighted to break new ground by taking the biggest sporting event of the year to Qatar and introduce a new audience to the thrilling sport of athletics at the highest level. From 27 September to 6 October, 49 new world champions will be crowned in the magnificent Khalifa International Stadium, including the inaugural winners of the mixed 4 X 400m relay, which will make its debut in Doha, before being added to the programme for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Doha already has a strong history as an exemplary host of some of our most important competitions, including the 2010 World Indoor Championships and the opening meeting of the annual Diamond League for the last 10 years. We are confident that it will again deliver a world- class event for the world’s best athletes. Featuring some 2000 athletes from more than 200 countries, this year’s championships are scheduled to be broadcast into more than 200 territories worldwide and to an estimated global audience of one billion. 2 MEDIA GUIDE In our campaign to modernise our sport and keep it relevant to the coming generations, you will notice significant innovation at this 17th edition of the championships, particularly in the areas of television broadcast and event presentation. Among the highlights, we have adjusted the programme to bring a greater spotlight to field events, creating a multi-events festival by scheduling the decathlon and heptathlon on the same two days, and leaving windows in the programme where the entire arena will be focussed solely on field event finals. The midnight marathons and road walks will also be a feature of this year’s programme, a creative solution to the climate challenges of the region which will allow us to use the stunning backdrop of the Doha skyline by night. This will be a historic moment for our sport, not least because these will be the last championships held under the banner of the IAAF, before we adopt our new name, World Athletics. The Media – Broadcasters, Writers and Photographers – always play a vital part in telling the story of our athletes and the championships to our global audience and we are always grateful for your commitment to our sport. The IAAF and the Local Organising Committee will offer you every assistance, in providing Media facilities and services that will allow you to relay all the action to the world. 3 IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 Welcome from IAAF Vice President, Director General IAAF World Athletics Championships – Doha 2019 / Dahlan Al-Hamad It is with a great sense of pride that I welcome you to Qatar for the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019.
