MEDIA GUIDE IAAF Championships 2019

Welcome from IAAF President / Sebastian Coe

Welcome to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, which brings the IAAF’s flagship event to the Middle East for the first time.

We are delighted to break new ground by taking the biggest sporting event of the year to and introduce a new audience to the thrilling at the highest level.

From 27 September to 6 October, 49 new world champions will be crowned in the magnificent Khalifa International Stadium, including the inaugural winners of the mixed 4 X 400m relay, which will make its debut in Doha, before being added to the programme for next year’s in Tokyo.

Doha already has a strong history as an exemplary host of some of our most important competitions, including the 2010 World Indoor Championships and the opening meeting of the annual for the last 10 years. We are confident that it will again deliver a world- class event for the world’s best athletes.

Featuring some 2000 athletes from more than 200 countries, this year’s championships are scheduled to be broadcast into more than 200 territories worldwide and to an estimated global audience of one billion.

2 MEDIA GUIDE In our campaign to modernise our sport and keep it relevant to the coming generations, you will notice significant innovation at this 17th edition of the championships, particularly in the areas of television broadcast and event presentation.

Among the highlights, we have adjusted the programme to bring a greater spotlight to field events, creating a multi-events festival by scheduling the and on the same two days, and leaving windows in the programme where the entire arena will be focussed solely on field event finals.

The midnight and road walks will also be a feature of this year’s programme, a creative solution to the climate challenges of the region which will allow us to use the stunning backdrop of the Doha skyline by night.

This will be a historic moment for our sport, not least because these will be the last championships held under the banner of the IAAF, before we adopt our new name, World Athletics.

The Media – Broadcasters, Writers and Photographers – always play a vital part in telling the story of our athletes and the championships to our global audience and we are always grateful for your commitment to our sport. The IAAF and the Local Organising Committee will offer you every assistance, in providing Media facilities and services that will allow you to relay all the action to the world.

1.3 HOST COUNTRY

Official name: State of Qatar Capital City: Doha Main Towns: Al Wakra, , Al Khor, Dukhan, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan, Industrial City, Al Shamal, Umm Salal National Day: 18 December National Sport Day: Every second Tuesday of February Population: 2,725,881 (data as of February 2019)

Qatar is one of the most dynamic countries in the Middle East which has undergone remarkable economic and social development over the last 25 years thanks to an attractive business environment and progressive national leadership.

Having hosted numerous sporting events for over two decades, Qatar has become a major global leader in sporting organisation and has helped accelerate the evolution of grassroots athlete development at home as well as across the region.

With its capital city, Doha, earning a solid reputation as a leading host for major international events, Qatar is consistently investing in its national athlete development programme, which is supported by the global sports training expertise of Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence.

Qatar, with proven gas reserves of over 900 trillion standard cubic feet in its North Field, and oil reserves of over 15.2 billion barrels, has one of the fastest growing economies and the highest per capita income in the world.

In a short space of time, Qatar has developed into a key global supplier of energy and is the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a world leader in gas-to-liquids (GTL) production. While developing its huge hydrocarbon reserves, Qatar has also diversified its economy, and emphasis is being placed on private-sector industrial development, education, health, sport and tourism.

The new real estate and urban developments revive heritage and embrace modernity: the redevelopment of the centre of Doha involves the construction of 750,000m2 of mixed-use space that combines ancient culture with modern technology.

16 MEDIA GUIDE 17 IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

The Pearl-Qatar, a multi-billion-dollar 4 million square metre reclaimed island has provided upscale housing and amenities for more than 41,000 international residents, creating 32km of new coastline. It is the first urban development in Qatar to allow international freehold ownership.

Another new district, Lusail, accommodates 200,000 people on over 35km2. It includes an entertainment district and energy city.

The country is served by Hamad International Airport which opened for service in May 2014. Metered taxis and limousines are easy to find and there is a comprehensive public transport system. An integrated rail and metro network saw its first line open in Doha in May 2019 and it is expected to be largely complete by 2022.

It is one of the most connected countries in the world with its telecommunications system upgraded to an entirely fibre-optic network.

Code of Conduct

Qatar is a Muslim country and as a courtesy, visitors should dress modestly. Swimwear is acceptable on private beaches or at private pools but should not be worn around town. Public displays of affection between men and women are discouraged, and if deemed to infringe on moral values, can be a punishable offence.

Alcohol may be purchased and consumed only on licensed premises. Drinking and driving is a serious offence and the country has zero tolerance towards drugs.

Shopping

In addition to the ‘souqs’ where visitors can shop for traditional handicrafts, the city of Doha has a variety of modern shopping malls that offer a wide range of stores selling everything from tourist favourites such as gold ornaments to international brands and consumables.

Shopping hours are generally Saturday to Thursday from 09:00 - noon and 16:00 – 19:00 or later, with the malls open until 22:00. Most shops are closed on Friday mornings, the traditional day off for most establishments.

18 MEDIA GUIDE Getting Around

Please refer to Section 5.4, “TAXI/CAR SERVICES” in this guide for detailed information.

Qatari riyal (QR) is the official currency of the State of Qatar. Each Qatari riyal is divided into 100 dirhams. Notes in circulation are in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500.

19 IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

1.4 HOST CITY

Doha’s position as one of the world’s leading host cities was confirmed in November 2014 when the IAAF Council voted for the capital city of Qatar to be their choice to stage the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships.

It will be the biggest single sport event to have ever been held in the Middle East, and it has ignited a raft of major infrastructure programmes to ensure that the city is ready to welcome the world from 27 September to 6 October.

Doha’s meteoric rise as a global hub for not only sport but trade, tourism and international conferences has been driven by the vision of a dynamic Ruling Family with a determination to position the emirate as a leading destination for business and leisure.

With direct flights connecting the city to most of the world’s population, Doha benefits from its location at the crossroads of east and west, and prides itself on a culture of friendliness that has extended a warm welcome to travellers for centuries.

But it is sport that continues to fuel the city’s worldwide appeal. It already has an impressive track record for hosting major events with the 2006 , 2011 Pan Arab Games and a number of World and Asian Championships successfully held in the city.

And winning the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 just four years after FIFA awarded its 2022 World Cup to Qatar has accelerated the city’s infrastructure development which will serve its growing population for generations to come.

Whether it’s the stunning and constantly changing skyline or the massive investments in landmark cultural icons, Doha is a city exuding confidence and style, and it is as much at ease with its modern shopping malls as it is with its heritage and traditional souqs.

The introduction of the Doha Metro earlier this year connects the city like never before, making Doha a city tailor-made for the 21st century, and beyond.

20 MEDIA GUIDE Climate: Doha has a hot desert climate with summer temperatures from May through to September consistently above 38°C (100°F).

Rainfall is scarce, at a total of 75 mm (2.95 in) per year, falling on isolated days mostly between October to March. The winter days are relativity warm while the sun is up and cool during the night. The temperature rarely drops below 7°C (45°F).

During the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 we can expect warm weather, with average temperatures of around 30 °C (86 °F) and humidity levels of around 60%. We can also expect around 10 hours of sunshine per day.

2. DOHA AND IAAF WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

2.1 INTRODUCING THE IAAF WORLD Athletics CHAMPIONSHIPS

Held every two years, the IAAF World Athletics Championships is the jewel in the crown of the IAAF’s global competition programme and the third largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup.

From the foundation of the IAAF in 1912 to the 1980 Olympic Games, the athletics programme of the Olympic Games had constitutionally been athletics’ World Championships.

In 1976, an IAAF Council meeting in Puerto Rico approved the creation of a separate IAAF World Championships in Athletics. was later selected as the host of the inaugural World Championships in 1983. Sandwiched between the heavily boycotted 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games, the maiden world championships benefited from having a full roster of competitive athletes from all corners of the globe and, topped by the triple success of Carl Lewis, was a resounding success.

A plethora of star names have followed in Lewis’s footsteps. ’s 11 World Championship titles are the most won by any male athlete in history surpassing the eight career golds of Lewis and Michael Johnson. ’s 11 titles make her the most successful female athlete in World Championships history. The greatest success in a single event is Sergey Bubka’s six titles from 1983-1997.

22 MEDIA GUIDE In 1993, the edition in Stuttgart, Germany, was the first championships to take place following the switch from a quadrennial to a biennial cycle. Today the championships are staged every odd year with athletes competing for medals in 49 event disciplines and an overall prize purse of more than $7 million.

The IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 are the 17th edition of the championships and will be the largest global sporting event of the year. Since the inaugural edition in 1983, we have seen the IAAF’s premier World Athletics Series event grow from 1,355 athletes representing 153 nations to over 2,000 athletes from more than 200 nations and neutral groupings here in Doha.

The eyes of the sporting world will be on the Qatari capital from 27 September to 6 October. Broadcast to more than 200 territories, the 10 days of full-on competition, played out to thousands of spectators in the stadium and on the streets of Doha, will, with the assistance of well over 2,000 officially accredited Media, reach an estimated accumulated global audience of six billion.

23 IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

2.2 DOHA – THE CENTRE STAGE OF A NEW VIGOROUS WORLD OF ATHLETICS

This year’s IAAF World Athletics Championships marks the 17th time the world governing body’s flagship event will take place since its inauguration in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland.

The IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 will set new heights with a series of innovations, which will be broadcast to millions of viewers across the world.

The competition commences on 27 September and will last until 6 October which, although later in the season than usual, is not unprecedented. Both the 1964 Tokyo and 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games took place in October and the athletics events at both the 1988 Seoul and the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games also took place in October.

Around 2,000 athletes from over 200 countries are expected to compete at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. Whilst the Federation remains suspended, its athletes who are found eligible to participate in international competition by the IAAF’s Doping Review Board, will compete as Authorised Neutral Athletes (ANA).

Whilst Doha staged the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2010, no Middle-East nation has ever staged the IAAF World Athletics Championships before. The Far East located cities of Tokyo (1991), Osaka (2007), (2011) and (2015) have been the only other Asian host cities in the history of the event.

The IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 will host, for the first time, a mixed event with men and women in the same team. The 4x400m Mixed Relay, which made its global debut at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau in 2017, has become a popular event with both athletes and fans and will debut in Doha before joining the Olympic programme in at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games next year.

24 MEDIA GUIDE High temperatures had always been a prohibitive factor for Middle-East nations to host major international sporting outdoor events, but not anymore. A cooling technology that will keep the field to an optimum 26°C year-round, using 40% less energy than conventional cooling tech has been installed to Khalifa International stadium, transforming the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 main venue to an athlete- and spectator-friendly place.

In order to protect the health and wellbeing of athletes by avoiding heat and dehydration problems, organisers have created a midnight and scheduled the Race Walks at night. All walking events will begin at 23:30 local time while the two Marathon races will commence one minute before midnight, meaning that all road events will literally last two days! The most famous night Marathon to date was in the 1960 Olympic Games which ended with the triumph of ’s legendary barefoot runner Abebe Bikila.

For fans there are plenty of exciting athletes to watch determined to break world records and there will be some highly competitive head to head challenges in both track and field events. But in Doha fans will mostly have their eyes fixed on local heroes Mutaz Barshim and Abderrahman Samba, a duo proclaimed keen to snatch the world title in the eagerly- awaited and 400m hurdles finals respectively.

25 IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

The winds of change that Sebastian Coe’s administration has brought to athletics, also made an impact to the athletes’ kit. The IAAF Council voted to permit national teams to display the logo of a national sponsor on the condition that the same sponsor doesn’t appear on the kits of more than four Federations, helping to create more revenue opportunities for Member Federations.

And in November this year, assuming it is approved by the IAAF Congress when it meets in Doha in September, the IAAF will roll out its new name – World Athletics – and a new, vibrant and modern brand identity. The Congress will also elect a new Council to guide the sport through the next four years, including 4 Vice Presidents, one of whom will be female, and the President.

The official mascot of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 is Falah, an athletic falcon emblazoned in the Qatari flag’s maroon colour. Falah was designed by Theodore Paul Manuel, a Filipino expat. According to his creator, Falah is a way to show the world how to be a true athlete: “He is competitive, courageous, and helpful like no other. He is loyal, funny, helps his friends and often shows off his athletic moves.”

42 MEDIA GUIDE 7.2 KHALIFA INTERNATIONAL STADIUM

7.2.1 GENERAL INFORMATION

Built in 1976 in Al Rayyan, 10km to the west of central Doha and 18km from The Pearl, Khalifa International Stadium has long been the cornerstone of the country’s sporting tradition.

The stadium was built as the flagship venue for the 1976 Gulf Cup hosted by Qatar and could initially hold 20,000 spectators. It has been upgraded several times over the years, most notably for the 2006 Asian Games, which increased capacity to 40,000 seats.

The arena already has an illustrious hosting history, having previously welcomed the 2004 Gulf Cup, the 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 Arab Games and the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, among other events.

When Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup in 2010, Khalifa International Stadium was proposed as one of the playing venues. An extensive upgrade started in 2014, and included a refurbishment of all stands, additional seating, additional hospitality facilities, and the construction of a large innovative roof membrane that covers 70% of the stadium.

Nowadays, the arena boasts an ultra-modern shape and dual arches, while inside the stadium, all seating areas are protected from the elements by a canopy, with further climate control delivered by advanced cooling technologies. The air-conditioning will keeps the pitch at a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and the stands at 24-28 degrees year-round while using 40% less energy than other cooling methods.

The latest chapters in the arena’s impressive history have seen it help the dazzling Aspire Zone to grow up around it and mature into a global centre of sporting excellence. In this sporting complex, Qatar’s next generation of talent is being honed at Aspire Academy, close to Aspetar – the world’s leading specialised orthopaedic and sports medicine hospital – and the largest indoor multi-sport facility in the world. Attached to the stadium via a walkway is the future 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum.

15.5 IAAF HERITAGE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS EXHIBITION

While you are in Doha, it would be worth finding time to visit the world’s largest ever athletics exhibition which opened on 18 April.

The IAAF Heritage World Athletics Championships Exhibition, celebrating the history of the IAAF World Athletics Championships, is located in the largest shopping mall in Qatar. The exhibition is open from 10:00 to 22:00 every day (until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and is situated on the 3rd floor of the City Centre Doha, 4th Street, West Bay Area, Doha.

The 400m2 exhibition features the world’s largest ever display of athletics artefacts and memorabilia, dating from 2nd century B.C. to the present day. These items include World Championships and Olympic Games uniforms, running spikes, medals, world record breaking equipment and implements etc…

Introductory displays cover Athletics as it emerged from the ancient Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The story is carried through to the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, the foundation of the IAAF in 1912 and to the creation of the IAAF World Championships in 1983.

At the heart of the exhibition are 10 huge display panels summarising the history of the 16 editions of the IAAF World Athletics Championships held to date. Additional specialised displays include the Athletics histories of the six continental areas, Qatari athletics and the development of Asics spikes. There is also a preview of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 accompanied by a SEIKO countdown clock and QNB display.

Six video screens, including a small cinema room where longer championship highlights are screened, offer the visitor the chance to watch plenty of competition footage from world championships history.

The IAAF Heritage World Athletics Championships Exhibition is kindly supported by the International Athletics Foundation, ASICS and SEIKO.
