AUTUMN TERM 1 - PLANNING GRID – YEAR 4 As historians we will be learning to: As investigators of the world, we will be learning to; As Scientists, we will be learning to: ~ Find out about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain: ~ Use maps, atlases, globes and computer mapping to locate: ~ Investigate how sounds are made and link to vibrations. ~ The founding of Rome and its expansion into an empire. ~ Find out about how sounds travel to the ear. ~ the countries of the Roman Empire. ~ The Roman Empire by AD42. ~ Italy and its capital city Rome. ~ Investigate pitch & volume and what changes these. ~ Roman soldiers and the structure and power of the army. ~ Investigate patterns in sounds made by objects ~ areas of the UK of particular significance in Roman Britain. ~ Roman invasion of Britain. of different sizes (e.g. pan lids or elastic bands). ~ local Roman sites in Cumbria. ~ British resistance (e.g. Boudicca). ~ Make own musical instruments based on Roman ~ Use Ordnance Survey maps of Cumbria to: instruments, using knowledge of pitch & volume. ~ ‘Romanisation’ of Britain – e.g. technology, culture & beliefs. ~ locate local Roman sites. (See Science & Music) ~ Look at historical evidence, especially locally: ~ Order, compare & round numbers, up to 4 digits. ~ Evaluate each other’s work, consider the views of others ~ e.g. Hardknott Roman Fort; Ravenglass; Hadrian’s Wall. ~ Count in 10s, 100s & 1000s. & make improvements. ~ Talk from local historian about the Romans in Cumbria. ~ Practise a range of strategies for mental calculations. ~Design a Roman Chariot ~The history of Rome in York ~ Begin regular practise of multiplication tables. ~ Addition and Subtraction up to 4 digits As artists we will be learning to: WHAT HAVE THE ~ Create a sketchbook and use throughout topic to record ROMANS EVER FOREIGN LANGUAGE observations and develop ideas and techniques. ~ Begin weekly lessons as an introduction to French. ~ Look at & discuss the work of artists depicting Roman scenes. Non-Fiction Writing (Link to History): RE - Christianity: ~ Look at examples of Roman sculpture & make a group sculpture. ~ Research aspects of Roman life, take notes, write a factsheet ~ Make links between the life of Jesus and the Romans. ~ Investigate Roman jewellery and make own examples. and present imaginatively. ~ Consider the effect Jesus had on people at that time. ~ Find out about Roman mosaics, look at lots of examples and then ~ Write a newspaper report about the Roman Invasion. ~ Discuss the reasons why Jesus was executed. design & create own mosaics (first paper, then tiles & pebbles). COMPUTING Reading: ~ Sing songs about Romans from ‘Sing-Up’ website. ~ Discuss texts in depth, in regular guided reading sessions. ~ Develop internet skills through topic-related research. ~ Discuss trustworthiness of information found online. ~ Develop prediction and questioning skills, using range of texts. P.E. – Ball games ~ Present topic work attractively using Word, PowerPoint, etc ~ Read, enjoy & share a range of texts, including poems.
