Given theamount of work they had to do in a very shortperiod of time, I'm sure they must have sacrificed many, manyhours of per- sonal leisure time in order tocomplete the task. Not only have the quantity and thespeed of work been im- pressive, but so, too, has been thequality. The selection of books and the writing ofannotations has been excel- lent, making my job as chairmanrelatively easy. A fortuitous event occurredtoward the end of the Committee's work which had a significanteffect on both the scope and quality of thisbooklistnamely, the ar- rival at NCTE of anunsolicited manuscript containing hundreds of excellent annotationsprepared by Claire Rosser, a librarian from WellesleyHills, Massachusetts. Since her listing includedbooks which had not been reviewed as yet, we asked for,and received, permission to include her annotationsof those books. We are espe- cially indebted, therefore, toClaire Rosser, for over two hundred and fifty of the finestannotations included here. Additionally, credit must beaccorded a prior junior high school booklist committeewho, under the direction of Grace Maertins, prepared anumber of the annotations for books published before 1970. Acknowledgement is due also to theNCTE editorial which was given staff for all the aid and encouragement Much so willinglythroughout the work on this project. of the quality of thispublication is directly attributable to their efforts. Many individuals and groupsdeserve special mention for the assistance they gave tovarious committee mem- bers in reading and annotatingbooks. Among those providing substantive assistance werethe following: Dorothy D. Grant, Treva HunterJacobs, Helen Griffith Minteer, Lillian Kachel, Marily Simon, Lynn Myers, Christock, Conrad Case, Fran- Anita Musser, Mrs. Arlis Ruth cis Goschy, DorisSchumacher, George Strand, 5 vi Acknowledgements Goslin, Douglas Stotter, and Nancy Dillingham. Many students also provided assistance in reading and anno- tating, especially Jane Christensen's seventh and eighth grade students, Janice Bengtson's accelerated ninth- grade students, Zora Rashkis's accelerated students, and Alan Madsen's English education students. To those and all others who contributed to this project, I and the students who will use this book owe sincere thanks. Jerry L. We believe that youprefer to select what you read all byyourselfat least part of the time. Reading is a private act, and sotoo is selecting a book. There's nothing wrong with takingpeople's advice about books; in fact, some of your bestreading tips will come from friends, parents, teachers, and librarians.Still, there will be times when the advice youreceive proves to be wrong. Sometimes youwill not like a book that others liked, and sometimes you willlike books that others didn't. Since no one else isexactly like you, it's impossible
