This includes $1.87 billion for southern Ontario, creating more than 18,500 direct and indirect jobs. Improving Ontario's transportation network is part of the government’s plan to strengthen the economy. Key highway investments planned between 2012 and 2016 include: • constructing the Windsor Essex Parkway • extending Highway 407 easterly • widening Highway 401 express and collector lanes between the Highway 401/403/410 interchange and Hurontario Street in Mississauga • building a new interchange at Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) and Laird Road in Guelph • widening Highway 417 from Nicholas Street to Ottawa Road 174 in Ottawa 2012 Planned Accomplishments Southern Ontario New highway 102km New bridges 5 Highway rehabilitated 410km Bridges rehabilitated 79 Southern Highways Program 2012-2016 Page 3 QUICK FACTS • Ontario has 16,600 kilometres of provincial highway and 2,756 bridges. • Ontario uses new technology and greener construction practices whenever possible, such as recycling existing pavement and using recycled and shredded tires for bridge embankment fill. Expanding the highway for 6.5 km will ease congestion during rush hour as commuters head to and from west Kitchener neighbourhoods. Eleven bridges will be widened and repaired, and a new concrete median barrier will be built to separate eastbound and westbound lanes, keeping traffic flowing efficiently and safely. The work begins this year with repairs to the Fischer-Hallman Bridge. Work will move east in subsequent years, finishing in 2015. All express lanes, east and west bound, and six bridges are currently undergoing major rehabilitation. The six bridges include the Hogg’s Hollow Bridge and the Yonge Street overpass. When repairs are complete, drivers will notice new pavement and see updated illumination, a new median and noise barriers. This project is one of several projects along Highway 401 through Toronto and is part of the Ministry of Transportation’s strategic rehabilitation program for Highway 401 between Renforth Drive and Warden Avenue.
