With over 20 years of experience in interior and exterior projects, Hilclare Lighting has extensive ability in lighting for sports facilities including: - Football and Rugby Pitches - Running Tracks - Squash Courts - Basketball - Tennis Courts - Golf Driving Ranges - Swimming Pools - Cricket Training - General Use Sports Halls Introduction Sports activities are now an important part of the curriculum in most schools, colleges and universities throughout the country. In fact, the importance of sport is such that there are specialist colleges becoming ‘Centres of Excellence’ in particular sports activities. Recently the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown announced that more money will be made available for “Sports Education”. Apart from these specialist centres most schools believe in developing the natural talents of those pupils who show excellence in a particular sport. In the majority of cases this training will be given during daylight hours, but more and more students are willing to train on evenings to develop their skills further. To enable students to train on an evening, when darkness falls, it is important that artificial lighting is provided, to enable them to train in a stimulating and safe way. For example, a young cricketer facing a solid ball coming at him or her at over 70mph, must be able to judge the speed and direction instantly, otherwise they may become injured. Good quality artificial lighting is also concerned with creating an enjoyable environment, so that the student can concentrate on learning the skills peculiar to their chosen sport. This brochure is intended to assist the lighting designer in creating a stimulating as well as safe environment by giving examples and suggestions which have been tried and tested over many years by Hilclare lighting engineers, using modern light sources and high quality luminaires. Many sporting activities can be lit to various levels of illuminance depending on whether the participants are training, or playing to local, national, or international standard. Where this is applicable, different examples are given to satisfy the various levels and standards. It is important that our future medal winners are given the best training at a very early age, and Hilclare will be with them all the way to help provide the best possible training environment. 3 Lighting for Sport As with any lighting situation there are many considerations to take onboard when designing lighting for sport. For example, the illuminance or amount of light will vary depending on the task. Also, a cricket ball racing towards you at high speed must be visible at all times along its trajectory, making the need for good uniformity of light. This brochure has been created to assist specifiers such as architects, consulting engineers, and local authority engineers to satisfy themselves that Hilclare Lighting has got the answers when it comes to School Sports Lighting. To help with this specification process we have looked in detail at the most frequently played sports in schools and colleges, and provided a lighting design which meets all the common criteria, together with a list of the Hilclare products required. However, it must be said that there is no substitute for a full lighting design being carried out by an experienced and qualified lighting engineer, and we strongly suggest getting one of our sales engineers involved as early on in the design process as possible. The result will be a well designed scheme that your school or college can be justly proud of. At heights lower than this the pitch will still be illuminated but there could be problems with glare when crossing the ball from side to side. It must be noted that where pitches run side by side, at least 10m should separate the PPAs, with the columns in between. It is advisable that the columns are root mounted and that padding is provided around the column bases to avoid accidents. Columns should be mounted at least 1m behind the Total Playing Area (TPA). For training purposes it is usual to use the lighting system at one end of the pitch only. This will maintain the quality of the lighting whilst saving on energy. Although SON lamps are more efficient than metal halide, it is generally accepted that due to the low hourly usage the colour rendering advantage of metal halide lamps make them the preferred option. 7 Football - Match Level - 200lux 4m 1m 65m 13.5m 27m 100m 27m 174 188 217 286 324 199 177 188 221 290 348 233 183 193 221 300 359 263 193 202 227 308 398 282 205 213 238 312 379 269 220 230 256 318 361 232 232 248 271 331 356 192 27m 245 261 292 355 399 218 248 269 307 379 439 326 249 271 307 392 486 391 242 263 305 387 469 402 229 250 285 349 415 351 13.5m 208 228 261 307 329 248 4m Ehav: 282lux Uniformity: 0.61 Total Load: 52.32kW Carbon Footprint: 6.64W/m 2 Equipment: 24 qty Hilclare GRANDE 2kW IP65 floodlight AFGH2K4IPL 8 qty 16m root mounted columns with brackets for 3 fittings 8 Football - Recreation - 75lux 4m 1m 65m 16m 38m 100m 46 51 71 117 154 68 46 52 72 118 131 64 49 54 70 103 98 65 50 55 66 83 77 50 50 56 65 68 63 47 38m 52 56 65 71 67 49 52 56 67 88 82 48 50 54 71 108 114 60 48 54 75 120 144 75 47 53 76 124 163 85 43 51 76 123 153 79 41 49 70 112 126 63 16m 39 45 61 91 90 44 4m Ehav: 75lux Uniformity: 0.5 Total Load: 25.86kW Carbon Footprint: 3.28W/m 2 Equipment: 18 qty Hilclare LUGO 1kW MH Asymmetric floodlight AFLH1KATL 12 qty Hilclare TALCA 400W MH Asymmetric floodlight AFTH400ATL 6 qty 12m root mounted columns with brackets for 5 fittings 9 Rugby Interior or Exterior: Exterior Size of Principal Area (PPA): 144m x 69m Size of Total Area (TPA): 154m x 79m Recommended Average Illuminance: Match Level: 200lux Class II Recreation: 75lux Class III Training: 50lux Recommended Uniformity Ratio: Class II: 0.6 Class III: 0.5 Special Points of Consideration Due to the pitch size at this level of play it would be normal practice to illuminate using 10m or 12m columns down each side.
