The 2009 / 2010 season was a positive step forward for developing a long term playing group that will see our Club be competitively consistent and therefore giving the entire group an opportunity to develop skills for a higher level. The Club‟s initiative to support Nick Jewells‟ appointment as Captain Coach with a suitably skilled panel of coaches has proven invaluable in developing our players for the future, having a wealth of first class knowledge and general cricket experience within the panel is unequalled in Premier cricket and the benefits, no doubt, will be rewarded by their continuous improvement. While the provision of a panel of coaches is broadly beneficial the leadership, commitment and professional preparation of the players by Nick has been outstanding and under his guidance will set a foundation and standard of excellence for this Club for many years. Governance Despite the Club‟s best efforts we again traded at a loss for the season, disappointing given the Board of Management worked extremely hard to ensure all areas of the club was managed responsibly and within good governance guidelines and financial accountability. A significant increase in membership subscriptions and the instigation of “Heat in the Kitchen” lunches was not enough to trade profitably. As is identified within the financial report the significant impact on the Club‟s income was the external hiring of the rooms for functions. Our research suggests that a number of functions that would normally source a facility such as ours were conducted in private homes due to the economic impact for many people. However the Board has already taken steps to turn this around and have developed a marketing strategy for the coming season in an endeavour to increase the use of the facility for functions. It should also be noted that the skill diversity of our Board of Management is as broad and experienced as we have had for a very long time, not only cricket, but business, financial and marketing management. Cricket Victoria The future direction of Premier Cricket is currently being challenged by Cricket Victoria with a strategy that will ultimately see all Premier Clubs required to play a greater role within their respective communities to meet a broader range of operational criteria. Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club – Annual Report 2009~10 3 For example by 2013 there will be another 2 teams incorporated within the competition taking to 20 the number of teams. The Clubs will be established from the north-west regions of Melbourne - being Wyndham, Hume, Melton and Whittlesea - all identified as major growth areas of Melbourne not supported by Premier Cricket. T20 cricket will continue to grow and the profile will increase, as we now see the Premier fixture includes T20 matches for points and there is a proposal for regional T20 competitions as well. The strategy suggests the model Premier club in the future will incorporate Women‟s senior teams as well girls and boys junior teams and be an “In2cricket” venue. Our responsibilities as a Premier Club will continue to grow and the need to ensure we have structures in place to meet these challenges is imperative to develop even greater community partnerships and the provision of a primary community leadership role. For our Club to benefit from this direction we will need to develop our own strategic plan, incorporating Cricket Victoria‟s guiding principles for Premier Cricket‟s future direction to ensure we consolidate our Club with a clear vision and understanding of how we can contribute to the “big picture” of cricket in our region moving forward. Volunteers The Board of Management should be complimented for committing to and supporting the innovation of the development of a coaching panel which has become the envy of other competition clubs. As touched on earlier in this report we now have a Board with a complimentary set of skills that assists with good governance and challenges and debates issues with a passion and a strategic vision. This strengthens our ability to continuously improve both on and off the field. The club formally acknowledged the retirement of Bill and Nance Wills, Pat Prendergast, Ann Walker and Marilyn Harvey after many years of service to this cricket club at the presentation night, however it would be remiss we did not record in this manner again our appreciation for their long term dedication to our Club. I take this opportunity particularly acknowledge once again the contribution by all, volunteers throughout the season appreciated; The Thursday night meals team lead by Helen Hudgson, Sarah Walker, Karen Voelkl providing delicious fair each selection night is a great tradition and appreciated by all. The continued contribution of Martin Wylie, this season‟s “Best Clubman”. “Marty” is highly regarded as a key Board member and team manager well done and we hope there is many years left serving our club. The new initiative this season of a series of lunches, the “Heat in the Kitchen” was successfully driven by Mark Dunsford. We all thank Mark for his efforts in establishing a significant supporter data base and a successful series of lunches and outstanding guest speakers. I‟m sure with continued support we can grow this initiative into a primary calendar of event fundraisers for our Club. Forty-one of our playing list of 60-plus this season have come from our pathway region, further reinforcing the role our Club plays within the region. Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is a task we are proud of and that Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club – Annual Report 2009~10 4 we take very seriously. The strength of our partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria ensures a well coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential - to coaches, managers and scorers for providing much needed support and direction. We also acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club. Sponsorship The Frankston City Council should be acknowledged for their ongoing support for the provision of first class Jubilee Park facilities. Local Government plays a primary role in the provision and maintenance of our facilities we congratulate and thank Garry Woollard, Manager Parkland Services. Number one again - the curation team headed by Dana James whose tireless work was again rewarded this season. Thank you for consistently providing high standard practice facilities, with bonus centre wicket sessions as well as providing all levels with excellent playing conditions week in week out. Thanks to our major sponsor BUILDSAFE, Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club over a long period, we express the Board‟s gratitude for his continued support. The Frankston RSL, have also been long term partners supporting our Club over our journey. Mark Dunsford - Financial Services Partners, Martin Scanlon - Rail Signalling Services, the Honorable Bob Smith MLC and David Glennie of Karingal Optical are all special sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement. To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and growing number of sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout 2009/2010 season your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Club. We are all looking forward with great anticipation and excitement to the „HEAT‟ being competitively strong in 2010 / 2011.
