She attended Bradford Girls Grammar School, and then read Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at St. Anne’s College, Oxford. After university, Anne worked for Unilever as a Business Systems Analyst. Having trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, and studied for an MTh at King’s College, London, Anne was one of the first women to be ordained deacon in the Church of England in 1987, and priest in 1994. In the eighteen years Anne served in the Diocese of Rochester, where she was instrumental in ministry development through the training for lay and ordained ministries, Anne was active in church planting. Anne was Adviser in Women’s Ministry, an educational selector for the Church of England, and was a member of the Chapter of Rochester Cathedral. From 2005 to 2011, Anne was the first female Warden of Cranmer Hall, the Anglican theological college in Durham, where she taught ordained ministry, mission, and leadership. In Durham, Anne had wide experience of working ecumenically, established a network of those working with visual arts, and was an honorary canon of the Cathedral. From 2011 until 2018 Anne served as Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Haddington. She chaired the review of ministerial training in the Scottish Episcopal Church, which led to the establishment of the Scottish Episcopal Institute. She has served as a member of General Synod, and was Chair of the East Lothian Foodbank. Anne has an interest in fine arts, and lectures regularly on the relationship between art and theology, mostly recently in Edinburgh and across the Lothians. Her other interests include quilting. Anne is married to Roger, and they have a daughter, Millie, who lives with them. You are kindly advised that there is a Retiring Collection at this service in aid of the Scottish Episcopal Institute Training Fund. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis (sung by the Choir) Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. 5 Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collects Almighty and everliving God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: hear our prayer which we offer for all members of your holy Church; that in their vocation and ministry they may serve you in holiness and truth to the glory of your Name; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. God our Father, you gave the Bishop David to the Welsh Church to uphold the faith and to be an example of Christian perfection. In this changing world may he help us to hold fast to the values which bring eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit. The Liturgy of the Word Old Testament Reading Ezekiel 34:11-16 For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be 6 the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Reader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Psalm 96 vv 1-7, Cantate Domino (sung by the Choir) O sing unto the LORD a new song; sing unto the LORD, all the whole earth. Sing unto the LORD, and praise his Name; be telling of his salvation from day to day. Declare his honour unto the heathen, and his wonders unto all peoples. For the LORD is great, and cannot worthily be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols; but it is the LORD that made the heavens. Glory and worship are before him; power and honour are in his sanctuary. Ascribe unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the peoples, ascribe unto the LORD worship and power. Sarah Rimkus, 2018 New Testament Reading I Thessalonians 2:2b-12 As you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.
