The Wine Australia Crush survey has the 2018 vintage crush at 83,000 tonnes a 35% reduction on 2017 figures but probably 20% down on the long term average. Due to the lateness of the frost many vineyards that were not directly frosted suffered from poor set, lowering yields. However the good news was the remaining fruit, in what was a warmer season, has produced excellent wine with great colours and flavour. China has continued to drive demand for higher grade red fruit, with the exports to China hitting $1.06 billion for the previous 12 months in Sept 2018, and total exports reaching $2.71 billion. 61% of Australian wine is currently being exported. Despite some political problems with China affecting wine and other commodities on the Chinese ports, the outlook still appears to be positive, although it is apparent these growth rates in sales cannot be sustained indefinitely. We have also seen this year in the region, not only significant replanting of existing vineyard, but new ground vineyards being established in Wrattonbully and Padthaway. Of note this year the LCGWC in co-operation with Limestone Coast local government tourism, South Grampians Shire Council and a number of other bodies, has secured funding from Federal Government and PIRSA to develop wine trails starting at the end of the Great Ocean Road and coming through the Limestone Coast heading to the Barossa Valley and Kangaroo Island. These trails will be on an interactive website and phone app, in both English and Mandarin, to show visitors the wine experiences available in the regions but also to promote food producers, restaurants and other tourism experiences, such as the Naracoorte Caves and Blue Lake, and Penola’s historic Petticoat Lane walk. Having all these experiences on the one website will allow tourists, particularly USA and Chinese, to plan a holiday/itinerary in the region or tourist operators to plan a holiday for someone. Total funding for this project is $350,000, with $50,000 input from the LCGWC and other local partners, and will take two years to get up and running. With approximately
