VARIOUSVARIOUS Part 1a October 2013 For next or previous screen: use the mouse wheel, or Pg Up and Pg Dn or ↑ and ↓ on your keyboard. A word from the editor……. Dear reader, A nice and thick autumn issue is ready for you to read. You see, we do not cut corners on the pages! Yet it is every time a considerable challenge to get it all online for you. And also in two languages! The name of the author and the photographer is always stated in an article, but there are also a number of 'silent workers' who help translate, and so-called 'native speakers' who then apply the finishing touch. Each in his profession, so the pigeons, poultry and waterfowl articles go to an expert in that field. We like to put these people in the spotlight by naming them here: In the Netherlands: Luuk Hans, Henk Meijers and Willem van Ballekom. In Germany: Mick Bassett, Thomas Hellmann and Arjan Warnshuis. In England: Denise Moss, Rinke Berkenbosch, Jim Mullan, Michael Hart and Frank Bridgland. In Australia: Greg Davies and Erik Berrevoets. In Romania: Bobo Athes and in de USA: Bill Burnside. Without their help Aviculture Europe could not exist! Moreover, there are always people welcome who occasionally want to help translate Dutch into English or vice versa, many hands make light work! Please contact the chief editor at [email protected] if you want to join the team. We wish you pleasant reading and for those who have not done it already: please subscribe to our newsletter by sending us your e-mail address, so that you will be automatically informed about the publishing of each new issue. With thanks to all contributors, sponsors and advertisers, on behalf of the team of Aviculture Europe, Nico van Benten CHICKEN OF THE WOODS? Text and photo: Johan Opsomer The sulphur shelf (Laetiporus sulphureus) is able to significantly 'pimp' an oak, or many other, preferably solitaire trees. Christmas decorations lose out against the colours of yellow and orange and sometimes there is even a pink sheen. The flat wavy fungi seem to grow from a single base and often form a significant mass weighing over 10 kg. Damage caused by a cracked off tree branch, carving your name or constriction by barbed wire can be sufficient to afford one of the millions of tracks the opportunity to become a sulfur fungus. Then you are right on time to plant a new tree, because the old one cannot be saved. The slow ‘killer’ disguised as a tiny chick will do its silent work. Growing, year after year, further and deeper with the hyphae penetrating the living tree so it weakens and finally falls. Photo: George Chernilevsky, Wikipedia. Sulphur shelf or chicken of the woods? When someone talks about 'chicken of the woods' (or in Italy: gallina dei boschi) instead of sulphur shelf, then it is a lover of culinary specialties. They are good to eat when they are young, assuming that you are not allergic and that you are sure you actually have picked sulphur shelf. And yes, they taste very nearly like fried chicken. The Barnevelder breed has existed for more than a century already and that is truly unique. The century anniversary gives the opportunity to put the Barnevelder in the spotlight. The Barnevelder has had an important role in the Dutch commercial poultry industry in the early 19- hundreds and obtained fame worldwide. In 2013 the Dutch Barnevelder Club therefore organises, besides several other events, the 1st European Championship for Barnevelders and ban- tam Barnevelders. This Championship will be held on 8 and 9 November in the Markthal in Barneveld. Greenfire Farms, Florida USA once more offers something special for sale: the rare Ayam Cemani – a fully black chicken – selling for $2,500...per chicken or $4,999 for a cockerel & a pullet. Greenfire Farms personally imported the breed from Indonesia, being the country of origin. They are very expensive there as well and in high demand, due to the meat's alleged medicinal properties. Read all about it at http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/daily-ticker/rare-2-500-chicken-lamborghini-poultry-163825389.html# In Europe, the Ayam Cemani has already been known for quite some time, although it is always an unusual sight, such a completely black bird. It was the Dutch breeder Jan Steverink who firstly imported the Ayam Cemani in the Netherlands, about 13 years ago. He also effected their recognition in the Dutch Standard Poultry in 2003. See also http://home.planet.nl/~stev7596/index.htm Now they are also kept by breeders in other European countries, but it is something for fanciers. Not only the feathers and skin are black, but also the bone and viscera, even the blood is remarkably dark. This genetic trait is called 'fibromelanosis' and also occurs in a number of Chinese poultry breeds, the Indian Kadaknath and the Swedish Black Chicken. Right: Head study Ayam Cemani cockerel.
