(Paul Nation, presenter) Note: To access the presentation, see the link, enclosed below. Abstract: This TESOL Virtual Seminar, “Teaching Vocabulary. Is It a Waste of Learning Time?,” with Paul Nation, was a PowerPoint + audio presentation held on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm EST. Overview: The work of the vocabulary teacher can be divided into four major tasks, in order of importance: to plan a well-balanced vocabulary course, to train learners to use vocabulary learning strategies, to test and monitor vocabulary growth, and to teach vocabulary. Vocabulary teaching has the lowest priority among the four tasks. The seminar looks at these four tasks and justifies and explains their significance. o Speaker Bio: Paul Nation is a professor of applied linguistics in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He has taught in Indonesia, Thailand, the United States, Finland, and Japan. His interests include language teaching methodology and vocabulary learning. His latest book is Learning Vocabulary in Another Language, published by Cambridge University Press, and he has a book on vocabulary teaching that will appear in 2007 from Heinle. o Acknowledgements: TESOL gratefully acknowledges the support of Heinle, a part of Cengage Learning for providing the technology platform for TESOL’s virtual seminars through their ELT Advantage (http://eltadvantage.ed2go.com/) program.
