Public Works Canada Collection: graphic material, Acc. No. 1984-082 The purpose of this introduction and the following finding aid is to aid researchers using Public Works Canada photographic material in the accession no. 1984-082 held by Library and Archives Canada. This accession consists of material from the Public Relations and Information Services Branch of the Department of Public Works Canada covering the time period c.1965-1981. The extent of the collection is 77,876 colour slides, 2742 black and white photographs, 817 colour photographs, 30,683 negatives and less than 0.1m of accompanying textual records; a total of 112,118 items that are stored in 66 archival containers. Two separate finding aids created for this accession provide material content descriptions: one for 35mm colour slides and one for graphic material (excl. slides) that includes safety, copy and inter negatives, colour and black and white photographs, and some textual records. These descriptions are at times linked, as subjects they describe are found in more than one medium, i.e. photographs, negatives and/or colour slides. Organization The colour slide material covers a wide variety of subject matter (see above) related to the activities and operation of Public Works Canada, and represents the majority of the collection. Slides are organized, for the first part, alphabetically by provinces and territories beginning with Alberta and covering multiple subjects and describing a variety of projects in a specific city, town or region. The structure then shifts to subject-based alphabetical organization that continues Public Works project and program coverage. The finding aid for the colour slides in this accession includes four (4) integrated appendices that provide a more detailed description and listing of (a) Canadian and International fine arts related projects commissioned by Public Works Fine Arts Program, (b) Canadian Artist Inventory, and (c) senior government officials and departmental staff. The remainder of the collection—safety, copy and inter negatives, colour and black and white photographs, and less than 0.1m of related textual material—is described in the graphic material finding aid (see below), which includes two (2) integrated appendices. These, in turn, provide more detailed information on and identification of safety negatives and individuals depicted in colour and black and white photographs.
