Audio Engineering Society - 2019 Election Candidate Information Candidate for AES President-Elect JOEL VIEIRA DE BRITO received his Electrical Engineering degree from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. He later went on to a post-graduation in Telecommunications from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. He started his audio career at 18, and spent 20 years in the touring and theater sound reinforcement business. He currently works as a design engineer on electroacoustical projects and as a consultant for manufacturers. Since 2001, Joel has had an active role in the Brazil Section, having served as Chairman three times, Committeeman and currently as Treasurer. Joel has been the Convention Chairman for the Section’s annual national convention for the last 17 years, organized numerous regional meetings throughout the country, 15 engineering conferences and the first Brazilian student recording competition. He was the Co-Chair for the AES Latin American Conference in 2009, and was awarded the Board of Governors Award for that service. As Vice President Latin America Region 2010 to 2013 he worked on increasing membership, creating new Sections and organizing Section events throughout Latin America as well as the Latin American Conferences of 2010 in Colombia, 2011 in Montevideo and 2012 in Guatemala. He has served as a member of the Society’s Laws and Resolutions, Nominations, Membership and Awards Committees. He is a member of AES SC-05-05, SC-05-02 and SC-04-03 Standards Committees. In March 2019, at the AES Dublin Convention, for “advancing the audio industry in Brazil and Latin America through decades of broad contributions to the Society,” Joel became a Fellow of the AES. Optional statement: My decision to stand for the position of President-elect reflects my commitment to the AES’s purpose to bring together the audio community. I would like for us to be known for significant accomplishments - ones we identify together. With almost twenty years of governance experience and proven leadership, I feel that my experience working under the leadership of the AES has also put me in a position to better understand the challenges of our society and how to further our agenda. If elected, you may be assured of my continuing commitment to fiduciary duty, creating new alliances with industry, and the pursuit of audio excellence. Candidate for AES President-Elect JONATHAN WYNER is a professor and author at the Berklee College of Music, Director of Education at iZotope and a well-known mastering engineer at M Works Mastering whose credits include David Bowie, Aerosmith, James Taylor and Miles Davis, the National Archive of New Zealand and countless others. A Member since the mid 1980’s, Jonathan’s dedication and commitment to the AES has shown itself through several roles. Jonathan served as Co-Chair of the 145th international AES Convention in New York, coordinating a new and engaging program that reflected the changing face of audio business and technology. He continues the role of Convention Co-Chair for the upcoming 147th AES Convention in October 2019. Jonathan has produced award winning educational content in his roles at Berklee College and iZotope and he has presented workshops and tutorials at many conventions and conferences in the U.S., Brazil, Poland, Germany, Ireland and Mexico. He is an active member of the AES Education and Diversity and Inclusion Committees, as well as the AES Technical Council’s Recording Technology and Production Committee. Optional statement: I have a sense of urgency that the AES needs to continue to evolve. During the last several years we have made great strides in modernizing our organization and systems and are taking steps towards a more diverse and more representative membership. I would look forward to continuing this work and will encourage a focus on modern technology and workflows in our programming. We also need to foster partnerships with research and industry building on that tradition in the AES. Local Sections are our life blood and we should work to help increase the visibility of the great things that are happening in them. We need to broadcast news and content from our offerings to new audiences by using web-based resources and innovating with programming at focused regional events everywhere. The AES is a great platform for networking, education and an exchange of ideas about all things audio that we should work to bring to an ever-widening membership. Candidate for AES Treasurer-Elect RICHARD WOLLRICH is currently the AES Treasurer and a member of the Society’s five-member Executive Committee. Richard currently serves as Chair of the Finance Committee and is also Co-Chair of the Society’s Convention Policy Committee. He was recently asked to serve as Treasurer for the upcoming 147th International Convention to be held in New York. This is a follow-up to his having successfully served as Treasurer of the 145th, 143rd, and 141st International Conventions. While performing these functions, Richard created a comprehensive budget structure to track delegate registration, exhibitor booth space sales, company-direct sponsorships and event expenditures. This provided, on a week-by- week basis, information on the financial health of each event, all of which proved to be financially successful. Richard’s philosophy as AES Treasurer has been to review the duties and responsibilities of that role, and work closely with the Executive Committee, the Board of Governors and the various Committees. He brings what he considers to be a fresh, committed focus on fiscal responsibility while identifying new technologies and practices utilized within other business environments that are relevant to the AES business model and determine how to effectively implement them at minimal cost. Richard earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a minor in accounting from Woodbury University, a Southern California private university specializing in business. During his career, Richard has also held full-time, elected officer positions as Treasurer and Secretary/Treasurer for several large International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees/IATSE-affiliated unions serving the entertainment industry. Optional statement: I have demonstrated that I possess the core skill set to develop realistic financial statements in concert with the Executive Director and the financial working groups within the AES. I have closely managed real-time income and expenses for AES domestic and international conventions, conferences and symposiums, to ensure that the Society does not incur unanticipated losses. I believe that the AES needs to identify what new technologies and practices are being used by similar organizations, and to consider how we can implement them to improve our bottom-line results. I hope that you will consider my experience as the past AES Treasurer-Elect and now AES Treasurer, as well as my past experience in the role of Treasurer for several large organizations in the entertainment industry, together with an earned Bachelor of Science Degree in business and my sincere dedication to the AES, when considering my willingness to continue to serve the Society as Treasurer.
