He is best known for his role in the drama series This Is Us (2016-present), which earned him four Emmy nominations, twice winning for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 and 2020. Jones has starred in such television series as Mr. Robot (2015-2016), Get Down (2016-2017), Luke Cage (2016-2018) and The Truth Will Be Said (2019). He has also appeared in a number of films, including Half Nelson (2006), Across the Universe (2007), The Glass Chin (2014), The Calendar of Holidays (2018), Days of Dogs (2018) and Domit is My Name (2019). Jones was born on January 8, 1957, in Paterson, New Jersey. He attended John F. Kennedy High School and graduated from Ramapo College. While in Ramapo, Jones initially intended to study jazz under the direction of director Arnold Jones (without communication), but changed majors in theater after getting the lead role in the production of Cinderella Ever After his sophomore year. Jones graduated from Ramapo in 1978, after which he moved to Los Angeles, California, and took a bus to the Southern California Rapid Transit Area for the next four years. During that time, Jones said he fell in love, had a baby, broke up. He then traveled while living in San Francisco, Arizona and New Orleans before returning to New York in 1985. After returning to New York in 1985, Jones began spending time at the Nuyoric Cafe in Manhattan's East Village. During this time he performed a play based on the song by Billie Holiday Don't Explain. His performance caught the attention of the casting director, which led to Jones being offered the lead role in the production of Teswell Thompson in Cheryl West's play The Holiday Heart in 1994. Jones has performed in several theatrical productions with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois; Appeared as Shakespeare's protagonist Richard III with the Public Theater in New York, New York, as well as other Off Broadway productions. Jones served as an understudy or understudy in several Broadway theater productions.
