Middlesex Public Schools – High School Media Center BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING MINUTES July 17, 2017 7:00 PM DISTRICT GOALS Move forward with a plan to provide a facilities infrastructure that appropriately, effectively and safely houses the programmatic needs of our students. Continue to improve student achievement at all grade levels for all students and decrease achievement gaps where they exist. Promote diversity within our school community to ensure that school programs and staffing support an inclusive learning environment for all students. BOARD GOALS Develop and implement a plan that improves the relationship of the Board of Education with the leadership team of the Middlesex Education Association. Provide support for district administration. Increase visibility of the Board of Education throughout the community. The Middlesex Board of Education and District Administration remind all participants that we are all working together in the best interest of each and every child attending the Middlesex Borough Public Schools. The Mission of our school district is to engage in a partnership with our community to provide the knowledge and skills for all students to achieve academically and to develop confidence in their ability to work through challenges, to be compassionate and respectful of themselves and others, and to be committed to overall excellence in a diverse world. All attendees are reminded that any verbal, written, or physical conduct that is demeaning or inflammatory toward any other while engaged in a school activity will not be tolerated. Each person is requested to take personal responsibility for conducting him/herself respectfully during all school functions. I. CALL TO ORDER TIME: 7:00 PM A. A regular public meeting of the Middlesex Board of Education was held on June 26, 2017, at 7:00 PM, in the High School Media Center at Middlesex High School, 300 John F. Kennedy Drive, Middlesex, NJ. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by Mr. Oliver, President. Mr. Oliver read the following statement: The New Jersey Open Public Meetings Law was enacted to insure the right of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meeting of the public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed and acted upon. In accordance with the provisions of the Act, the Board Secretary has caused notice of this meeting to be published by having the date, time and place thereof posted on the bulletin board located in the hallway outside of the administrative offices, and notice was provided to the Courier News, the Home News Tribune, and the Middlesex Borough Clerk. Presentations Referendum Update Financial Information Lisa Gorab, Bond Counsel Attorney, Wilentz, Goldman and Spitzer Ms. Gorab presented the proposed tax impact for the referendum. A copy of the analysis is attached to the minutes. (Attachment A) Infomercials & Updates to the District Website Referendum Page Town Hall Meetings Scheduled to present Referendum Information Tri-OP Agreement Athletics Athletic Director Michael O’Donnell reported to the Board about an opportunity for student to compete in ice hockey in a tri-cooperative with Bernards and Somerville High Schools. There would be no cost to the District. Board Self-Evaluation Discussion Mary Ann Friedman, NJSBA Representative, reviewed the results of the Board of Education’s self- evaluation. The summary document is included in the minutes of this meeting as an attachment. (Attachment B) B. Announcements Board of Education President: Mr. Oliver announced that Board Member, Ms. Keyes wrote a letter of resignation to the Board. Ms. Keyes asked that Mrs. Harrity read her letter in her absence. Motion to accept the resignation of Mr. Keyes. Business Administrator, Mrs. Loree reported on the construction projects: The Gorman Gymnasium is painted and the floor refinishing will start tomorrow. The High School Guidance Office flooring is completed.
