Throughout the year, students will read and respond to a variety of texts including a novel, poetry, plays and non-fiction texts. During the year, students will work on improving their English skills as well as practising writing in the generic structures required for years 10 to 12 English. They will develop their skills in writing, speaking, listening, reading and viewing in order to fulfil purposes that are creative, persuasive or analytical. There is still an emphasis on the explicit teaching of English skills such as grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary building; homework tasks centre on practising these to mastery level. All students are required to the homework book - “English Rules 3”. Teachers will teach the grammar, punctuation and spelling rules from these books and the students complete exercises for homework. Each week they will be tested on their spelling, the ‘English Rules 3’ worksheet is marked, and a writing-based activity related to their unit work checked. Students will need to read the set text for the unit of work being studied that term. Literacy lessons continue to occur for the first 25 minutes of the English period. These lessons address the specific abilities of each student and focus on improving comprehension, reading and writing skills. The Year 10 English Work Programme continues to be based around the integrating device of “VOICE” – the same focus for all English Programmes from Years 7 – 10 Unit Outline Assessment Summary Unit One: This unit explores the value of literature and Technique: persuasive and My Cogent Voice feature articles; their structures and entertaining language features. This covers the core topics of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability as well as Finance. The course will use the proficiency strands of Fluency, Understanding, Problem Solving and Reasoning to help students engage and learn the mathematics they need. Students will access the program through a variety of learning activities involving textbooks, ICTs and faculty provided resources.
