Waring III, MD, FACS, FRCOphth Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Emory University School of Medicine Atlanta, Georgia Private Practice, InView Refractive Surgery Center Atlanta, Georgia BRIEF BIOGRAPHY George O. Waring, III is an ophthalmic surgeon with 30 years of experience in vision correction surgery, RK, LASIK, intraocular lens implants and cataract and corneal surgery. He was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 21, 1941. He received his MD degree from Baylor Medical College, Houston, Texas. His ophthalmology training included a residency followed by a Heed Fellowship in corneal disease and surgery at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), of the Royal College of Ophthalmology (FRCOphth, Britain), and of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Waring began his academic career in 1974 as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis, where the established the first eye bank in northern California. In 1979 he joined the faculty at Emory University, where he was a tenured Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Refractive Surgery, until 2004; he is currently Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Emory. In his busy consulting practice in anterior ocular segment diseases and surgery, he has done approximately 1000 corneal transplants. He was a Founder and Managing Director of the privately owned Vision Correction Group (Emory Vision/InView Vision Center) from 1994-2004, where he has done more than 10,000 LASIK and other refractive procedures. He has trained over 50 Fellows in corneal and refractive surgery. Since 2004, he has practiced privately in Atlanta at the InView Center. In 1992, he received a National Institutes of Health Fogarty International Scholars Award to do research in laser corneal surgery at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Paris, France. In 1993-95, he served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of Research at the Al-Magrabi Eye Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he helped develop LASIK. Dr. Waring is or has been a member of approximately 40 ophthalmological societies including the American Ophthalmological Society, International Society of Refractive Surgery, and the International Intraocular Implant Club. He has served on national and international Boards of Directors. 4 His research has included National Institutes of Health grants to study radial keratotomy (as National Director of the PERK Study) and excimer laser corneal surgery. He has received approximately 60 research grants. He presented the data to the US FDA that led to the first FDA-approved clinical excimer laser vision correction surgery in the United States. As the Principal Investigator of the Emory-sponsored investigations of LASIK, he received the first physician- sponsored investigational device exemption from the U.S. FDA. Dr. Waring was Editor-in-Chief (from 1989 to 2010) of the Journal of Refractive Surgery, and has served on more than 20 other editorial boards, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has published over 260 peer reviewed original articles, 70 book chapters, and 260 brief communications. His authoritative 1300-page textbooks, Refractive Keratotomy for Myopia and Astigmatism, and Corneal Disorders: Diagnosis and Management (with Howard Leibowitz, MD) are standard references. The Waring Medal for Editorial excellence is awarded annually by the associate editors of the Journal of Refractive Surgery to an author publishing an outstanding paper in the previous year. He has received professional awards including three American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Awards (including its Life Achievement Honor Award in 2004), the Society of Heed Fellows Outstanding Ophthalmologist Award, an Honorary Medal from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, a Gold Medal from the 5th International Congress on Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Florence, Italy, two gold medals for contributions in international ophthalmology from the Pan Arab Council of Ophthalmology, the Castroviejo Medal from the Corneal Society, and the Lans and Barraquer and Kritzinger and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Society of Refractive Surgery. In 2008, he received the Weisenfeld Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology “for applying stringent scientific principles in his pioneering work”. For the past 15 years, Dr. Waring has been listed frequently in the “Best Doctors in America,” “Americas Top Doctors,” in various “Who’s Who” compellations, including “Marquis Who’s Who in the World” in 2008. He has spoken or demonstrated surgery at more than 600 ophthalmic meetings in approximately 60 countries on six continents. He has given over 35 named lectures at universities and professional societies. He has been active in public communication concerning ophthalmology and has appeared on Nightline with Ted Koppel, the McNeil/Lehrer News Hour, the ABC 20/20 News Show, Good Morning America, ABC Nightly News, and on CNN. Dr. Waring serves as a Medical Consultant to multiple ophthalmic companies. He serves as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases – for both defendants and plaintiffs. Dr. Waring enjoys sporting and outdoor activities, often with his four children. He plays squash weekly. He is an avid alpine snow skier, including frequent heliskiing in the Bugaboo Mountains of British Columbia (more than one million vertical feet of heliskiing). As a whitewater kayaker, he has boated the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, the Zambezi River below Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and the Sun Kosi River in the Everest region of Nepal. He has mountain climbed in the Mont Blanc region of France, summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, climbed on the Matterhorn in Switzerland and Aconcagua in Argentina, and made a first-ascent of KangYaja (19,925 ft.) in the remote Dolpo region of the Nepali Himalaya (Rock & Ice, March/April, 1996; The American Alpine Journal 1996;38:274-278). He is also a DiveMaster in the Professional Association of Dive Instructors, diving extensively in the Red Sea, in Papua New Guinea, and with the great white sharks in South Africa. Multiple African safaris have been by land, on rivers, by walking, in hot air balloons, in game hunting reserves, and on horseback. Most summers he can be found bareboat sailing ---- somewhere.
