While some groups have experienced an increase in new residents enquiring about becoming volunteers, numbers of experienced and DBS checked volunteers able to be out and about will be depleted. Groups will be focusing on maintaining support to existing clients and where they have capacity they will help as many other local people as they can. Each group is set up and run by residents and the support that they can offer will vary depending on the range of skills and time available within their pool of their volunteers. They are working closely with other local groups including new covid-19 groups so if they are unable to help someone they will use their local knowledge to try to find suitable alternatives. Volunteers don’t take on tasks best suited to trained professionals or the emergency services but help out with occasional things that can make all the difference, such as delivering shopping; walking the dog; or ringing up for a chat with someone who is self-isolating.
