Reed The difficult and essential aspect of making a mix – whether playing a live DJ set, tweaking an iTunes or spotify playlist, or sitting with your finger poised on the pause button of your tape deck, trying to start recording at exactly the right instant – isn't just the selections you make, or the order you put things in. It's the personal element: sharing how YOU hear music, giving other people a direct line to the radio station in your head. You determine the format, you set the parameters, and sometimes you decide to break your own rules. ("Can I really use two songs by the same artist on this? JUST WATCH ME.") You use other people's sounds and words, and use them to express your own feelings, whether that's "I think I really like you" or "this has been a rough week" or "these are tunes you should know" or "we should totally dance". In short, you take the pieces you want, use them to fashion cocktails, and serve them to an audience. Some work best when sipped slowly, some are meant to be consumed in one quick shot. You get to make those calls, you draw the through line, you decide when to use rare imported ingredients with names you can't pronounce, and when to bring old favorites back into the spotlight. And when you come up with just the right combination, when the flavors blend just right, the context you've created becomes the work itself. It's no longer about what components you've used, it's a whole new thing made up of these things you love. And that, right there, that synthesis… That's the true magic of mixology.
