INTRODUCTION The FCSSAA, along with the planning committee from Yellowhead Region, is excited to highlight some of the dynamic and interesting speakers and activities that will take place during this year’s Power of Inclusive Communities Conference. Building on the theme of diversity and inclusion, the group has developed a program that will stimulate discussion and provide effective strategies that can be used by your community to make it welcoming to all. Dave Meslin OPENING KEYNOTE SPEAKER Building a Culture of Engagement Apathy is all around us. People have become disengaged not only from politics, but also from our schools, neighbourhoods, workplaces and associations. Dave Meslin encourages us to recognize apathy as a web of barriers that reinforce disengagement – and that we can work together to dismantle the obstacles. By inverting the traditional pyramid of hierarchy we can create meaningful opportunities to engage. We’re stronger and smarter when we’re all involved. Mary Gordon CLOSING KEYNOTE SPEAKER Examining Wellbeing in Childhood and Building Inclusive Societies through the Cultivation of Empathy Mary Gordon is recognized internationally as an award-winning social entrepreneur, educator, author, child advocate and parenting expert who has created programs informed by the power of empathy. We are spread over 122 countries around the world and reach over 9.7 million students per year. At JA Southern Alberta, we reach nearly 30,000 students per year and we continue to grow each year. This is all possible through a partnership between the business community, educators and volunteers who work together to inspire young people to reach their dreams and tap into their potential. Our approach allows volunteers to deliver our curriculum-based programs while sharing their own experiences and knowledge. The value is in the ‘real world’ perspective.
