Christchurch . 8143 . p 355-6522 . e [email protected] The Power of the People The local residents of Mairehau have spoken and been listened to by the Council and it has been decided that the existing bus stops at 430 Innes Road, 411 Innes Road, and at 6 and 7 Philpotts Road, will remain where they are. A total of 30 written submissions were received with 77% being against the proposed changes to the bus stops on Innes Road. Additionally, a petition with approximately 1200 signatures was also collected opposing the proposed bus stops at 395 and 402 Innes Road. Peter Rodgers from Traffic Operations says, ‘Council staff will further investigate the possibility of bus stops, further west on each side of Innes Road, to accommodate easier passenger crossings and connecting between the proposed 44 and Orbiter routes, after the proposed 44 route changes come into effect.’ Flower Bazaar owner Des Banks who was concerned for all of the businesses on Innes Road as well as the ongoing safety Des Banks from the Flower Bazzar concerns at the pedestrian crossing says, ‘the community got together and won the battle to make the decision makers think again. The Mairehau community responded and as a result we collected over 1200 signatures opposing what was both detrimental to the small business owners, and more importantly the safety issue for the local primary school and others that use the pedestrian crossing’. Editorial It was such an awesome result having the Council decide not to move the bus stops on Innes Road and is another example of people standing together to support their local business owners. We may be a small but community but there is a lot of passion and determination when it is believed such a change will be detrimental to not only livelihoods but also safety. The concerns of the pedestrian crossing by the Innes Road shops are ongoing with near misses almost every day. Please be careful using this road as it has a high volume of school children using the crossing as well as other local people. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the City Council for listening and changing their decision, for preserving the future of our local shops, our community hub and a meeting place for many to pop down for a natter. This year, they are fundraising to support their school rebuild and help pay for things not covered by the rebuild budget. Attractions include the radical run obstacle course, merry-go-round, screamer slide, madagascar castle, police scanners, zorb / bumper balls, old time games, face painting, and much more. The Pedalmania Crazy Bikes will be back too, and thanks to Neighbourhood Trust these will be free for you all to enjoy. Try your luck with Crack the Code, the Chocolate Wheel, raffles, auction, or Mystery Buckets, which sold out in minutes in 2016 so get in quick. Grab a bite from one of the food stalls or pick up a sweet treat from the cake stall. You can also pick up a bargain from the plant, book, or toys stalls. Entry is free, and most activities are $2. The Breeze Spring into walking! 29 September 14 October Spring is on the way and so is the Breeze Walking ccc.govt.nz/walkingfestival Festival, 29 September to Sunday 14 October 2018. Now in its seventh year, the festival offers 50 free walks with a range of easy, medium and challenging routes. Many of the walks combine the chance to learn more about nature, culture, history and new developments around our city and region. The opening weekend sees the return of the popular feature walk ‘Dogs Day Out’ that begins with a guided scenic walk in the Heathcote Valley and then the opportunity to explore Ferrymead Heritage Park at your leisure with doggie-tram rides, free micro chipping for Christchurch registered dogs, and lots of treats for dog lovers of all ages. In July the Shirley community demonstrated the positive power of a piece of firewood to build a community. This started with community organisations concerned about families who were without firewood and were unable to heat their homes. They were living in cold unhealthy homes with young children and using power they could not afford for ineffective heating. A few emails and phone calls brought together helpers from a cross section of the community, all providing what they had to contribute in time or equipment.
