September 2018

Published by Neighbourhood Trust September 2018 . Vol 11, No 8 . Issue No 117 Contributions to: P O Box 21179 . . . 8143 . p 355-6522 . e [email protected] The Power of the People The local residents of Mairehau have spoken and been listened to by the Council and it has been decided that the existing bus stops at 430 Innes Road, 411 Innes Road, and at 6 and 7 Philpotts Road, will remain where they are. A total of 30 written submissions were received with 77% being against the proposed changes to the bus stops on Innes Road. Additionally, a petition with approximately 1200 signatures was also collected opposing the proposed bus stops at 395 and 402 Innes Road.

Peter Rodgers from Traffic Operations says, ‘Council staff will further investigate the possibility of bus stops, further west on each side of Innes Road, to accommodate easier passenger crossings and connecting between the proposed 44 and Orbiter routes, after the proposed 44 route changes come into effect.’ Flower Bazaar owner Des Banks who was concerned for all of the businesses on Innes Road as well as the ongoing safety Des Banks from the Flower Bazzar concerns at the pedestrian crossing says, ‘the community got together and won the battle to make the decision makers think again. The Mairehau community responded and as a result we collected over 1200 signatures opposing what was both detrimental to the small business owners, and more importantly the safety issue for the local primary school and others that use the pedestrian crossing’.

Editorial It was such an awesome result having the Council decide not to move the bus stops on Innes Road and is another example of people standing together to support their local business owners. We may be a small but community but there is a lot of passion and determination when it is believed such a change will be detrimental to not only livelihoods but also safety. The concerns of the pedestrian crossing by the Innes Road shops are ongoing with near misses almost every day. Please be careful using this road as it has a high volume of school children using the crossing as well as other local people. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the City Council for listening and changing their decision, for preserving the future of our local shops, our community hub and a meeting place for many to pop down for a natter. This means so much to so many people, so thank you. Take Care, Amber September 2018 page two

The Mairehau Primary School community is excited to bring you another MPS Gala. This year, they are fundraising to support their school rebuild and help pay for things not covered by the rebuild budget. Attractions include the radical run obstacle course, merry-go-round, screamer slide, madagascar castle, police scanners, zorb / bumper balls, old time games, face painting, and much more. The Pedalmania Crazy Bikes will be back too, and thanks to Neighbourhood Trust these will be free for you all to enjoy. Try your luck with Crack the Code, the Chocolate Wheel, raffles, auction, or Mystery Buckets, which sold out in minutes in 2016 so get in quick. Grab a bite from one of the food stalls or pick up a sweet treat from the cake stall. You can also pick up a bargain from the plant, book, or toys stalls. Entry is free, and most activities are $2. Change will be available at the gala. A huge thank you to Matthew and Blair from Williams Corporation for kindly supporting our gala as a major sponsor. Williams Corporation has a vision of Christchurch being the most liveable city and we really appreciate their involvement with our local community.

How a piece of firewood builds a community By Steve Jones-Poole, Community Activator. In July the Shirley community demonstrated the positive power of a piece of firewood to build a community. This started with community organisations concerned about families who were without firewood and were unable to heat their homes. They were living in cold unhealthy homes with young children and using power they could not afford for ineffective heating. A few emails and phone calls brought together helpers from a cross section of the community, all providing what they had to contribute in time or equipment. There were residents who were receiving firewood who Quitting Smoking came and helped deliver firewood to others, members of Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, the Shirley Rugby League club volunteered their time to and the health of your family. News from Councillor Pauline Cotter Warm greetings at the tail end of winter. I am sure we are all feeling that spring is definitely in the air arguably one of the most controversial projects ever seen in our area is the Government’s Northern Arterial Motorway, and the associated City Council obligation to link the motorway from QE11 drive into the CBD. Because the increased traffic flow will be directed via Cranford Street the Council has engaged an Independent Traffic engineer to determine some design options to lessen the impact of approximately 40,000 more vehicle movements on Cranford St. The Council has consulted to determine residents views, and I am pleased to report that there have been over 400 submissions of a very high quality received. Many people are opposed to any radical changes, preferring to adopt a wait and see approach, and there was also a strong theme coming through regarding concerns around pedestrian and cycle safety, and carbon emissions. We are now waiting for the Engineers report. Another side effect of the motorway is the loss of the right turn from QE11 Drive into Philpotts Road. This will impact on the Orbitor’s inbound route, and because of this ECAN Councillor Pauline Cotter is consulting on changing that route. (ECAN is responsible for the bus routes and the CCC is responsible for the infrastructure like bus stop locations and bus shelters). The Innes community board has received a huge amount of negative feedback from residents and businesses, who have expressed a variety of concerns, including the 6 local streets which are proposed to serve as a new route for the 44, and the adverse effects this will have on those residents, and serious concerns about possible re location of bus stops. Consultation has now closed with a large number of submissions received and a petition with 1200 signatures opposing the proposed re location of bus stops in the business section of Innes Rd. (We have since heard the bus stops are no longer proposed to be re located outside the businesses in Innes Rd). There are some great things happening in the ward, like the upcoming opening of the new community centre for the Shirley Community Trust in McFarlane Park, the completion of the new Pavilion in St Albans Park, the gaining of resource consent for the new community centre in Colombo St, and the completion of the Dudley stream flood remediation works and the removal of the big machinery from the site in Shirley Rd. The residents of Richmond/Shirley have suffered greatly for a very long time from the disruption and noise of the Dudley works, and the associated road closures. The Papanui Innes Community Board is working hard with appropriate Council staff to find a way to remedy the situation and improve the road network there as soon as possible. The Community Board meetings are open to the public, all welcome to attend, and you can also keep up to date by checking in on our Facebook page. Arohanui

Spring is on its way, don’t delay With spring on its way, it’s easy to get excited at the prospect of sunnier days and warmer temperatures. However, no matter the weather, it is important to take the time now to create and maintain a healthy home. Check out our top spring cleaning, energy saving tips for September: · Clean your heat pump filters, especially after all that winter use. Simply open the plastic covering on the unit, locate the filters, slide them out, and run the vacuum cleaner over them. · Make the most of the warmer days and ensure you dry washing outside. 1 load of washing can release up to 5 litres of moisture in the air. If you must dry washing inside, put it in the garage or away from main living areas. · Did you know that insulation provides year-round thermal comfort? Insulation not only helps you keep warm in the cold winter months, but it can keep you cool in the warmer weather also! Consider using the cheaper spring months to pay off the things you need for winter – CEA can check your insulation for free, www.theramass.co.nz provide insulation subsidies for homeowners (currently subsidies of at least 9 Shirley Road 67%, up to 92%) and offer interest free payment plans for the remaining Mairehau, Christchurch costs. Criteria applies. Ph (03) 385 0544 · Don’t forget to ventilate your home. Open doors or windows at opposite ends of the house, for at least 10 minutes every day. Creating a cross breeze will ventilate your home quickly and effectively. The new, fresh air you bring in is much easier to heat than damp, stale air that often gets trapped inside the home. · You can remove mould with a simple home solution; mix 70% white vinegar and 30% hot water in a spray bottle, leave on the surface for a minute, and wipe it clean. A mix of 2-3 drops of oil of clove (available from pharmacy) with 500mls of water and spray onto curtains. Leave the spray on overnight/until it has dried, and brush or shake off mould (outside the house). CEA provides insulation subsidies, home energy checks, free recycled curtains through the Curtain Bank, and a free energy advice hotline on 0800 GET WARM. Give us a call, email [email protected], or visit www.cea.co.nz for more information on how we can help you create and maintain a healthy home this spring. September 2018 page six
