Good News September 15, 2017 Coronado Robotics componentry, design processes, public speaking Coronado is home to School District Eleven’s high school to rally sponsorships and support, demonstrating robotics team. Back-to-School The school year started with a SPLASH of COLOR! Student Council organized a color dance the evening of the first day of school for all students, Friday, August 18, 2017, in Coronado’s courtyard to celebrate the new school year and “unite” our diverse student body. Students wore as much WHITE as they owned, bought 2 bags of chalk for $10, and had a ball getting drenched in color. Orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink was on kids’ faces, in their hair, all over their t-shirts, pants, shoes and sidewalk. The night was a great success and a lot of fun! Good News September 15, 2017 Solar Eclipse Second day of school for all students and Coronado’s Astronomy classes were totally immersed in their subject. August 21, 2017 marked a solar eclipse which would be approximately 92% visible from Colorado Springs. Admin prepared a special schedule allowing hour-long lunch periods in order to mingle in the courtyard and take advantage of the eclipse itself. There was a definite shadow cast as the moon obscured the sun, yet we did not experience a total eclipse or darkness. Still, what an experience. Mrs. Escobar, Astronomy teacher, had her students set up information tables sharing viewing safety tips and handing out eclipse glasses. They were prepared to help all students and staff with questions about this astronomical event. What is a solar eclipse? What are the different types of solar eclipses? How often do they occur? What is the path of totality? How does a total solar eclipse affect animal behavior? Astronomy students also shared and demonstrated indirect viewing tools and techniques during the eclipse. It was a very successful event. Just for the record, the next total eclipse will be July 2, 2019. You can see it on land at sunset in either Chile or Argentina, or on a cruise ship in the South Pacific Ocean! Cougar Coffee House attracted the talent of Coronado staff Janice Ruybal with her classical guitar selections, Jenna Barnett’s modern dance to Bree Hobgood’s singing and guitar, Tyler Philipsen’s solo rendition of the Scarecrow’s, “If I only had a brain,” which fit perfectly with our Homecoming theme of Emerald City, and, of course, Jeff Hodur’s beautiful vocals and guitar playing. Emceed by drama teacher Erin Ambroz and senior Keir Teeter, the evening included student talent; Gia York’s singing, Colin Barsocchini with original spoken word, Ellie Myers and Lindsey Stancato performing a comic tragedy, Gabby Phelps recited a brief but entertaining synopsis of Dante’s Fire, original song writing and singing for both Daniel Peterson and Josh Kendal and a rousing performance by Even with a Homecoming week full of activities, students and Heliosheath featuring Ryan Binkley, Richard Strobel and Eli staff made time for the first Cougar Coffee House of the year Johnson. Good News September 15, 2017 Coronado Alumni Coronado graduate Kyle Snyder, Class of 2014, won another Freestyle Wrestling World championship August 26, 2017 in Paris, France. In the process he helped team USA win its first Freestyle team title since 1995 defeating Russia by a single point! In the men’s 213.9 lb. class, 2016 Olympic and 2015 World Champion Kyle Snyder won the gold medal by decision over Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia with a score of 6-5. Snyder was behind 5-3 heading into the last minute of the match, but forced a stepout and had a takedown for the win. Watch Kyle’s match here! Cross Country Junior Ben Swanson won his first ever varsity cross country race and led the boys to a second place finish at the Lake County Invitational in Leadville, Colorado on September 2, 2017. The race started on the Colorado Mountain College soccer field and the entire course was over 10,000 feet in altitude. The girls ran short of a full roster and placed 6th in America’s highest city race. .
