The funds were contributed by Herman and Edna Halperin and are adminis- tered by the IEEE Foundation, Inc. From 1959 through 1986, the award for outstanding contributions to the field of electric transmission and distribution was named the Wil- liam M. Habirshaw Award. Herman Halperin was a recipient of the Habirshaw Award in 1962. Mr. Halperin had a distinguished career with the Commonwealth Edison Company over a period of 40 years. Subsequently, he spent 15 years as a consulting engineer. He was particularly noted for his pioneering contributions to the design and operation of electric plant facilities and power cable systems. In the evaluation process, the following criteria are considered: technological importance, successful appli- cation, originality, leadership, publications, and the quality of the nomination. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to electric transmission and distribution. The award con- sists of a bronze medal, a certificate, and honorarium. Sponsors: Robert and Ruth Halperin Foundation, in memory of the late Herman and Edna Halperin, and IEEE Power & Energy Society. Boggs 8 IEEE Herman Halperin Electric Transmission and Distribution Award DUSAN POVH 2020 Recipient For contributions to the development and applications of HVDC and FACTS DUSAN POVH has played an essential role in laying the foundations for the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and flexible alternating- current transmission system (FACTS) technologies prevalent today that ensure secure and reliable power delivery around the world. Povh helped introduce HVDC technology using thyristors and was responsible for system and filter design for the Cahora Bassa and Nelson River HVDC systems introduced during the 1970s. His pio- neering work concerning FACTS includes damping of subsynchro- nous oscillations and realization of static Vat compensators using thyristors. FACTS technology today helps increase the reliability of AC grids and improves efficiency and transmission quality. Povh’s focus on the interaction between AC systems and HVDC systems has enabled the reliable operation of HVDC systems integrated with HVAC systems. An IEEE Life Fellow, Povh is an independent consultant in power system analysis, HVDC, and FACTS residing in Nuremberg, Germany. 9 IEEE Nikola Tesla Award The IEEE Nikola Tesla Award was established in 1975 through an agreement between the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the IEEE Board of Directors. The Award is named in honor of Nikola Tesla, an electrical engineer, a distinguished Yugoslav-American inventor, and a pioneer in many fields, who is most renowned for the development of the coil that bears his name and the a-c induction motor. This award was created to recognize outstanding contributions to the generation and utilization of electric power. In the evaluation process, the following criteria are considered: im- pact on technology, inventive value, breadth of use, leadership, and quality of the nomination. "Generation" areas may include: automation, instrumentation, control, generation planning, alternative forms (e.g., wind, solar, fuel cells, and space power), conservation, safety, and reliability. "Utilization" are- as may include: conservation, biomedical (e.g., MRI, focused ultrasound, etc.), life quality improvement for the handicapped, manufacturing systems, and robotronics. This award consists of a bronze medal, a certificate and honorarium. Sponsors: Wolong Electric Group Co., Ltd., IEEE Industry Applications Society and the IEEE Power & Energy Society Current Committee Members: Past Recipients: Based on available information Complete listing is available on website Annette Muetze (Chair) 2013 Norio
