The Group Stage saw 24 associations represented among the 48 teams, with clubs from Hungary, Poland, Norway and Russia featuring for the first time. Competition was fierce as several groups went to the wire, with holders Club Atlético de Madrid and eventual German champions Borussia Dortmund among the illustrious casualties. In the end, however, it was a season dominated by Portuguese clubs, with SL Benfica and eventual finalists FC Porto and SC Braga occupying three of the four semi-final spots alongside fellow Iberians Villarreal CF. While it was the eighth time in the history of the UEFA Cup/Europa League that both teams hailed from the same country, never before had such close neighbours locked horns in a UEFA final. Less than 55km separate the Estádio Municipal de Braga and FC Porto’s Estádio do Dragão, but local niceties were put to one side when the teams walked out in the magnificent setting of the gleaming new Dublin Arena. In a season where they secured the second treble of their history, breaking record after record along the way, it was perhaps fitting that FC Porto claimed the trophy. Under the guidance of André Villas-Boas, at 33 the youngest head coach to win a European competition, they won 14 out of 17 matches and scored 44 goals along the way, 18 from Colombian striker Falcao who broke Jürgen Klinsmann’s competition record. But there were other landmarks, notably the first occasion that a UEFA club final had been staged on Irish soil. Credit must go to the Football Association of Ireland and the city of Dublin for putting on a wonderful occasion. This season, the competition will once more break new ground when the final moves to the other side of Europe, to Bucharest, and to another brand new stadium. And once again, the road to the Romanian capital will be full of memorable matches and great goals, hard-fought victories and exhilarating skills, played out in electric atmospheres the length of Europe. I wish you all a thrilling UEFA Europa League journey. Gianni Infantino UEFA General Secretary 5 UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE | Season 2011/12 First Qualifying Round Results Date Venue Teams Res.
