2014 North Star Calendar Our Friends and their Lincolns The North Star Region Car of the Year The Magnificent Lincoln K for 1937 Owned by Tom Brace Below: Dick Koop of Dardenne Prairie, MO is shown with his very nice 1956 Continental Mark II. Ford wanted a superior and standalone up-market brand aside from Lincoln, to compete with General Motors' Cadillac and Chrysler Corporation's Impe- rial brands. The new Continental was not intended to be the largest nor the most powerful automobile; rather, the most luxurious and elegant American car available, designed to recapture the spirit of the great classics of the prewar period—with prices to match. The Mark II's inspiration was the cele- brated V12-powered Lincoln Continental of the 1940s, among the most notable cars of that War- interrupted decade. Above: June and Lloyd Pearson of Edina, MN are the very proud owners of this 1939 Zephyr three window Coupe. Designed by John Tjaarda (1897–1962), who was fascinated with airplanes, with a Cd of 0.45, the body was monocoque construction and very rigid, but surprisingly light for its size. The first model had a weight of 3,350 lb. The original engine had 110 hp and gave the car a top speed of 90 miles per hour. Suspension was by Henry Ford's beloved transverse springs front and rear, with dead axle front and torque tube rear, already seen as outdated when the car was introduced. Brakes were cable-activated for 1936 to 1938; 1939 and onwards were hydraulic. Driven carefully and sparingly, Bill brings it to a couple of our events each year. Bill has been a good caretaker of his Mark III, and it looks as good today as when it was new. Intended to compete head-to-head with Cadillac's heavily redes- igned front wheel drive Eldorado, the Mark III made its debut a clear notch above less expensive, less well-appointed personal lux- ury cars such as the Ford Thunderbird, Buick Riviera and Oldsmo- bile Toronado. As the Eldorado was built upon the Toronado frame, so the Mark III was the Thunderbird's. While the side- rail frame was identical to the Thunderbird's, the Mark III bore almost 300 lb more bodywork. Power was ample from Lincoln's all- new 460 cu in 365 bhp V8, a member of the Ford 385 engine fam- ily. Above: John, Lydia and Elsie Trandem, Fargo, ND own a number of really nice Lincolns from the last seven decades, with most from the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. You have to see his collection to fully appreciate just how nice they are. We hope to see little Elsie behind the wheel of one of her dad’s Lincolns (and a member of the LCOC) someday in the future. Gil drove all the way down to attend our fall North Country Lincoln show. Needless to say, he won the long distance award. Town Car was still available in three trim levels: Base (renamed "Executive" in 1991), Signature, and Cartier—in increasing order of price and appointment of features. Cartier was now available in several interior and exterior colors (up until now, it had only been available in a single paint scheme every year). The second generation Town Car was an overwhelming sales success and became one of America's best selling full-size luxury sedans. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Town Car sales regularly ex- ceeded 100,000 units with 120,121 Town Cars being sold in 1994 alone. The vehicle was so widely received that it was named the 1990 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Above: Diane Phelan, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, owns this 1979 Mark V Cartier edition. This is a beautifully maintained Mark, which looks as good underneath as it does above. It is shown here at the 2013 Tulsa, Mid-America and was a favor- ite. It is another car which is always driven to meets and consistently shows very well. The Lincoln Continental Mark V was a large coupe sold by Lincoln, the Ford Motor Company's luxury division, between the 1977 and 1979 model years. The Mark V was a restyled Mark IV, replacing that car's more rounded styling with a more squared-off, sharp-edged detailing. It also lost 222 lbs when equipped with the optional 460 engine (as the 1976 Mark IV had standard). The Mark V was highly successful with an average of 75,000 units being sold each of the three model years. The car also was the highest selling of the en- tire Continental Mark line. It has provided them with the traditional Town Car comfort that we have grown to expect from Lincoln. After ten years on the market (nine of them as the Town Car) relatively unchanged, Lincoln redesigned the Town Car inside and out for the 1990 model year. While the Panther platform was retained, along with the powertrain, every body panel on the outside was changed; the angular design seen since 1970 was abandoned. The front half of the Town Car echoed that of the Mark VII and the 1988 Continental, with the Rolls-Royce grille given a far more aerodynamic shape and the exposed halogen headlamps replaced with a wraparound composite design. Above: Carole and Brad Yoho of Stillwater, MN shown with their 1947 Continental Coupe. The V12 just hums so sweetly as it goes down the highway at 65-70 Mph. The 1939, 1940, and 1941 models were essentially the same design, with only slight modifications from year to year. For the 1942 model year, which was cut short by the beginning of direct American involvement in World War II. After the attack on Pearl Harbor US civilian-use automobile produc- tion was suspended, to be restarted in 1945-1946. Ford's Lincoln division would continue to produce the Continental for model years 1946 to 1948. Like all other post-war Lin- colns it received updated trim, including a new grill, to re- fresh the design. Walnut interior trim was added in 1947.
