Many staff and students of the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh, helped me during the last six years. In particular, my primary supervisor Nicholas S. Adams provided keen comments and showed patience and trust. He introduced me to the writings of the Cambridge theologians Rowan Williams, Gillian Evans, Nicholas Lash, and John Milbank. I learned much from my secondary supervisor Fergus Kerr about how to read Catholic theology and analytic philosophy profitably and together. My thanks to Theodore Scaltsas and the School of Philosophy, University of Edinburgh, who included me in an evening’s entertainment of Marilyn and Bob Adams in May 2004. Marilyn Adams met with me at Oxford University in July 2005 to discuss a chapter and the overall project, and she later read a submission copy of my thesis and provided comments through correspondence. She followed-up with me at the University of Toronto in March 2006. Professor Adams is exemplary in her hospitality, inquisitiveness, openness to disputation, and encouragement. I had several valuable exchanges about the early chapters of this thesis with Mark R. Talbot at Wheaton College and the Most Reverend Chrysostomos of Etna from the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies. My thesis examiners, Oliver Davies and David Fergusson, pressed non-medieval counterpoints that I had not encountered. I am indebted to them for widening the range of readings of Adams that I now must consider and for their assistance in completing the thesis process.
