A REFLECTION DURING THIS YEAR HONORING THOSE IN CONSECRATED LIFE BY SR. ANGELA ZUKOWSKI, MHSH DIRECTOR, THE VLCFF OF DAYTON UNIVERSITY’S ONLINE PROGRAM Note from Fr. Pete… As one of the facilitators of the University of Dayton’s Online Theology Program (along with Joyce Donahue from the Diocesan Religious Education Office), I have had the privilege of ministering with Sr. Angela Zukowski over the last few years. Sister’s compassion and pastoral ministry is truly a blessing for those who, throughout the world, have participated in what is called The Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (or the VLCFF). For more in- formation, go to www.vlc.udayton.edu. Consecrated life is a gift from God. There are many types of consecrated life within the Church today. The Church is blessed with lay consecrated life and religious consecrated life within apostolic missionary, mo- nastic and contemplative religious communities. Each type of consecrated life contributes to the life of the Church in the 21st century. I am a member of THE MISSION HELPERS OF THE SACRED HEART, an apostolic missionary community. Our mission is to be open to the Spirit, discerning the course of our ministry in changing times, ready and willing to adapt and change when called. We collaborate with others in the Church, individually and as a communi- ty, as we test our vision, revitalize our ministry and constantly discover new directions as the Spirit calls us. Consecrated life, in an apostolic missionary religious community, is an invitation from God to dedicate one’s entire being to both growing in holiness (deeper communion with God) and embracing an apostolic mission- ary life in service to proclaiming God’s word and love as revealed in the heart of Christ. Aware that many in the world hunger for bread of God’s word and their daily bread, as a Mission Helper of the Sacred Heart, I strive through my ministry to alleviate these hungers where I am able. By living in solidarity with the poor, by being an advocate for them and others who suffer injustice, by teaching social responsibilities that come with the stewardship of this world’s resources, a consecrated life offers a daily invitation to be challenged anew to live faithfully my initial calling in evolving new contexts and times. As a member of an apostolic missionary community, I strive to live out my consecration in a spirit of radical freedom and openness for reading the signs of the times and discerning creative responses. A consecrated life requires self-discipline to live simply (poverty), free my (our) hearts to love and strengthen our ability to ex- press this love in caring relationships (celibacy) and to stand in rapt listening to the voice of God in dialogue with the community in order to authentically participate in the mission of the Church. As a consecrated women religious, I am convinced that my (our) call is to be messengers of hope and joy in troubling times. By focusing all our spiritual, intellectual, moral and physical energy for establishing a culture of peace and jus- tice, consecrated women and men can be leaven in the communities we are called to serve. In a growing secular and materialistic culture, consecrated life offers a profound witness for an alternative way of living and witnessing to the living power of the Holy Spirit acting and transforming the world. There is no doubt that a life of profound prayer is central to our call in consecrated life to live lives of holiness and service. Through daily prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours, Lectio Divina and participating in the Church’s central act of workshop, the Eucharist, I, a consecrated women religious drinks deeply from the heart of Christ and is able to ground myself for mission. As we deepen our inner life, the concerns of Christ’s heart become our own, and our life radiates the unconditional love of Christ to all those we encounter each day. In the light of the above, a Mission Helper of the Sacred Heart’s apostolic missionary vocation, is to interpret Christ’s message with simplicity of language, so that his word can reach the minds, touch the hearts and re- new the lives of all we are called to minister. Consecrated life is concerned with heart touching heart! Con- secrated life is dedicating oneself for striving to awaken all to a profound encounter with Christ. In this way, consecrated life is more than about ‘me’ it is about being on permanent mission for others to encounter Christ!
