WASHING OF CLASSICAL BALLET: A CHOREOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF DISTURBED STILLNESS AND THE OCEAN'S CONTROL. Close, B., student. Page 4 Vita for James R. Sandifer Research and Original Creative Work About the companies: Suzanne Farrell Ballet: I was employed by the Kennedy Center to design lighting for a majority of the dances in the repertory of the Kennedy Center's resident dance company, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. The Artistic Director, Suzanne Farrell, is one of the prima ballet artists of the twentieth century. Urban Bush Women: The Brooklyn based dance company, Urban Bush Women, has been presented worldwide and includes among its honors a 1992 Bessie; the 1994 Capezio Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance; and 1998 and 2004 Doris Duke Awards for New Work from the American Dance Festival. For more information, please visit http://www.urbanbushwomen.org/. Compagnie Jant-Bi has been acclaimed for its dynamic performances around the world. Germaine Acogny, called the mother of contemporary dance in Africa, is a winner of the 2007 Bessie award for choreography and is the Director and founder of Compagnie Jant-Bi and L'Ecoles des Sables International Dance Center in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal. For more information, please visit http://www.jant-bi-acogny.com. Seaside Music Theater: Seaside Music Theater mounted eight fully envisioned productions each year. Almost all of the productions were musicals or operas with full orchestra. SMT had a permanent staff of twenty but was home to a company of up to 200 during the summer seasons. This number included union performers, directors, designers and musicians from around the world as well as burgeoning talent from across the country. An average of 48,000 audience members passed through the doors of SMT each year. In May of 2008, after thirty-two years, SMT was forced to close due to financial difficulties. I was the Lighting Designer for the productions listed from 1984 to 2007. In addition, I designed the repertory light plot (the basic layout of equipment, for all productions) for every summer season since 1984, with the exception of the 2002 summer season. Directors of each production are listed. Lester Malizia was not only a Director but was also the Artistic Director of the company. Ballet Mississippi was a professional classical ballet company based in Jackson, Mississippi until the early 1990's. Presentations Nonrefereed Presentations at Conferences Sandifer, J. R.
