Cartridge headstamp guide by white Continue The codes are listed by number codes, then in alphabetical order from A to I, and then a list of suspicious codes at the end. Note 1- Headstamps often contain several pieces of information. The manufacturer is almost always identified. Military munitions usually include date information, and civilian munitions often have information about calibers. Sometimes the dates are quite obvious (44 - 1944; 72 - 1972; 6 12 - June 1912, etc.). Sometimes the caliber information is either presented or shortened (30-06; 38 SPL, etc.), and sometimes, for example, on German DWM ammunition, the catalog number code is used for the caliber. Sometimes the information on the head part indicates the type of load (VII on .303 British indicates Mark VII ball ammunition loaded with nitrocellulose powder.) Sometimes marking intentionally cheats, as with some .30 carbine ammunition marked LC 52, made by the Chinese, or .30-06 marked B N 4 40, made in the U.S. as probably designed to arm the Allies, concealing its source. Sometimes the head aver only indicates the cartridge manufacturer, or the distributor of the loaded cartridge, or the activity of use, and not the actual producer of the loaded cartridge. Even collectors with extensive work experience and extensive reference libraries end up with multiple cartridges they can't identify, so don't feel bad if you can't identify everything.
