The biggest tower is the Crown Tower in the south-east from the 13th century, which held the crown jewels. The outside walls and inside corridors contain fragments of old Gothic and Renaissance construction elements. In 1809, the castle was bombarded by Napoleon cannons and in 1811 a fire set by an Austrian or Italian soldier destroyed most of the castle. The reconstruction started in 1953 and finished in 1968. The castle is recently reconstructed again with many changes including changing the wall color from brown to white. GRASSALKOVICH PALACE (PRESIDENTIAL PALACE) (2) The building is a Rococo/late Baroque summer palace with a French garden. It was built in 1760 for Count Antal Grassalkovich. The garden behind the Palace is currently the only maintainted French garden in Bratislava. The garden was constructed in 1760, the same time as the Palace, and was rebuilt to its original appearance in 1999. The Palace and Garden is also known as „Presidential Palace“ and „Presidential Garden“. The Palace is used as a residence of the President and it isn´t open to the public, but the garden is open all year long. PRIMATE´S PALACE (3) The Primate´s Palace is a neoclassical palace built from 1778 to 1781 for Archbishop József Batthány, after the design of architect Melchior Hefele. Today, it serves as the seat of Mayor of Bratislava. The palace and its most famous chamber, the Hall of Mirrors, have played host for many significant events. The most famous of them is the signing of the fourth Place of Pressburg in 1805 after the battle of Austerlitz, which effectively ended the War of the Third Coalition. During reconstruction in 1903, a series of six previously unknown tapestries were found behind a wall, depicting the legend of Hero and Leander and their tragic love. The tapestries were woven in the 1630´s at the royal weaving workshop at Mortlake. Also you can notice a big hat over the sculpture at the top of the building. It is sign that in this building was the seat of cardinal. ST. MARTIN´S CATHEDRAL (4) St. Martin´s Cathedral is a Gothic style church. It was consecrated in year 1452. The altar is dominated by St. Martin´s equestrian statue group. The statue was made by G.R. Donner. The tower of the cathedral is 85 m high and is the highest tower of the city.
