Welcome to St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church on this the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time! We come together to be strengthened for the Christian life, and to be nourished in our Faith. We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for our Masses this weekend! It is an honor and a joy to be together around the Altar of the Lord! This coming Wednesday, November 1st, is the Feast of All Saints. On this day, every year, we celebrate all of those who have lived the Catholic Christian life bravely and honorably! They are examples for all the rest of us, especially as we all try to make our way through this world and home to Heaven. The Saints are as diverse as all of us! Some were old and some were young. Some were men and some were women. Some were very well-educated and some had no education at all. Some came from families with a lot of money and some came from families with no money. Some were recognized for their holiness while they were living, and some no one noticed until after they had left this world. Indeed, we can read the list of thousands of extraordinary lives who have been canonized and made the “official” list of Catholic saints. But we also know that there are thousands more saints who will never be canonized, but who none-the-less lived heroic Christian lives, and who are now home in Heaven enjoying their reward! Some of these un-canonized saints we knew as our great- grandparents or our grandparents, or our neighbors, or our teachers, or as that special priest, or religious brother or sister, or that person that was just simply at Mass all the time, praying over on the side of the church, and who was always an example of faithfulness to us when we saw them. We give thanks to God for the intercession of all the Saints! And for the example of the living saints that we have in our own midst today. Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation. Plan now to attend Mass on either Tuesday evening at 5:30 PM for the Vigil Mass, or on Wednesday, the Holy Day itself, at either 8:00 AM with our School community, or again at 5:30 PM on the Feast Day itself. All Masses will be in the Main Sanctuary of our church building. At all Masses for the Holy Day, the Universal prayers, the Petitions, are replaced by the praying together of the Litany of the Saints, where we humbly ask for the Saints to pray for us! Come and join us for this special celebration of our Faith! And remember, this Wednesday is like a Sunday for us as Catholics. Thursday, November 2nd, is the Feast of All Souls. Thursday is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation. It is the day when we pray for ALL of the dead, most especially, all of those who have died in the last year. We all have our own lists of those who have died who have played such major roles in our lives. The older we get, the longer that lists gets. Traditionally, November is the month when we remember to pray for all of those people. Beginning on Tuesday evening, October 31st, our Book of Remembrance will be placed on a table in the church narthex, just below the new case for the Prayer Cards for the Deceased. All are invited to write the names of loved ones and family members who have died, so that we can all pray for them during this next month. As the Universal prayers are replaced at Mass on All Saint’s Day, so too on All Soul’s Day, the Universal prayers are replaced by a solemn reading of the names of all of those who have died from our Parish family, since last All Soul’s Day. It is a beautiful remembrance. Even though it is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all are invited to come and join us for this special Mass on All Soul’s Day, also at 5:30 PM. I greatly enjoyed seeing so many of our children at the Trunk-or-Treat event this past Friday evening. The creativity that some folks have is truly amazing to me! I want to thank our Holy Name Society for once again sponsoring this event. It was great fun! Please be aware that Daylight Savings Time ends next Sunday, November 5th, and you’ll need to remember to “Fall Back” and turn back your clocks one hour. Or else you could be an hour early for Mass! Have a great week! Let us keep one another in our prayers! In Christ, Fr. Kevin Too many people have a strong WILL, and a weak WILL NOT. Welcome! For more than 21 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
