The President took the Chair and read the prayers. 2 DISTINGUISHED VISITORS The President welcomed into the public gallery a delegation from the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Secretariat of the Republic of Korea, led by Secretary General, Mr JinHo Lee. 3 MESSAGES FROM THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY The President reported the following messages from the Legislative Assembly: Cognate bills— (1) Criminal Assets Recovery Amendment Bill 2014 Mr PRESIDENT The Legislative Assembly having this day passed a Bill with the long title “An Act to amend the Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1990 to make further provision with respect to the recovery of proceeds of illegal activities from persons associated with the perpetrators, and for other purposes” presents the bill to the Legislative Council for its concurrence. Legislative Assembly SHELLEY HANCOCK 18 March 2014 Speaker (2) Mining and Petroleum Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 Mr PRESIDENT The Legislative Assembly having this day passed a Bill with the long title “An Act to amend mining, petroleum and planning laws to make further provision for the grounds for certain administrative decisions affecting mining rights and petroleum titles and the interrelationship between mining and petroleum laws and planning laws; and for other purposes” presents the bill to the Legislative Council for its concurrence. Legislative Assembly SHELLEY HANCOCK 18 March 2014 Speaker Bills, on motion of Mr Gay (on behalf of Mr Gallacher), read a first time and ordered to be printed. Mr Gay moved, according to contingent notice: That standing orders be suspended to allow the passing of the bills through all their remaining stages during the present or any one sitting of the House. Question put and passed. Ordered: That the second reading of the bills stand an order of the day for a later hour of the sitting. 4 VIEW CLUBS OF AUSTRALIA 2014 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY LUNCHEON (Formal Business) Ms Ficarra moved, according to notice: 1. That this House notes that: 2373 Legislative Council Minutes No. 190—Wednesday 19 March 2014 (a) on Thursday 6 March 2014, VIEW Clubs of Australia held a luncheon at NSW Parliament House in support of International Women’s Day, (b) VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women and is a leading women’s volunteer organisation and support network that empowers women to have their voices heard on issues of importance for the future wellbeing of Australian society, (c) VIEW provides women with the opportunity to meet regularly with other women from all walks of life, establish lasting friendships and help disadvantaged Australian children through supporting the work of children’s charity, the Smith Family, (d) VIEW continues to hold a unique place in society as the only national women’s organisation solely focused on supporting and advocating for young disadvantaged Australians in need, (e) VIEW members actively raise funds, sponsor Learning for Life students and volunteer in their communities to support the work of the Smith Family helping young Australians in need to build better futures for themselves by providing long term support for their education, (f) in New South Wales there are 213 VIEW clubs with 9,987 members who sponsor 511 Learning for Life students, (g) over the past 54 years VIEW has grown to a national membership of more than 18,000 women drawn from all parts of Australia in the predominately 40 plus age group and VIEW members live and work in 353 Australian communities with 60 per cent of members living in regional and rural areas, (h) each year VIEW members contribute over 50,000 hours of their time and talents to support disadvantaged students, raise in excess of $1 million annually and sponsor 1,082 disadvantaged children through the Smith Family’s Learning for Life suite of programs which aim to break the cycle of disadvantage and members read with local children to advance their literacy skills, help children with homework at Smith Family after school Learning Clubs, act as mentors for students, make library bags, donate school stationery packs for use at home and school and fundraise for the Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal at Christmas time, (i) key note speakers at the event included: (i) the Hon Shelley Hancock MP, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Member for South Coast, as host, (ii) the Hon Pru Goward MP, Minister for Family and Community Services and Minister for Women, (iii) the Hon Victor Dominello MP, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Citizenship and Communities, (iv) Dr Lisa O’Brien, Chief Executive Officer, the Smith Family, (v) Mr Rodney Williams, Program Coordinator Learning for Life, the Smith Family, (vi) Mr Trent Hunter - Learning for Life Student, and (j) dignitaries that attended the event included: (i) the Hon Marie Ficarra MLC, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier of New South Wales, (ii) the Hon Amanda Fazio MLC, Opposition Whip in the Legislative Council, (iii) Mrs Leslie Williams MP, Member for Port Macquarie, (iv) Mrs Roza Sage MP, Member for Blue Mountains, (v) Dr Mehreen Faruqi, Member of the Legislative Council. 2. That this House: 2374 Legislative Council Minutes No. 190—Wednesday 19 March 2014 (a) congratulates and commends VIEW for their outstanding work in the community supporting disadvantaged children over the last 54 years, (b) acknowledges and commends VIEW National Vice President Ms Lyn Gerstenberg, VIEW National Vice President Ms Sue Field who acted as MC at the event, the Smith Family Chief Executive Officer, Dr Lisa O’Brien and VIEW National
