2011-12 menu of HE activities for Aimhigher target schools and colleges This document briefly outlines the plans local universities are working on for outreach activities in 2011-12, after Aimhigher ends. Schools and colleges who wish to be informed of the final details, dates and procedure for registering for events and activities are asked to ensure that they have logged their details with their Aimhigher borough coordinator or with the Aimhigher Greater Manchester coordination unit (see website www.aimhighergreatermanchester.co.uk). Aimhigher will pass a list of all school and college contacts to the universities. Outreach and aspiration-raising opportunities from September 2011 to July 2012 at Greater Manchester Universities Aimhigher is changing the uni4me website (www.uni4me.co.uk) which will remain as a portal for information about activities and for resources for schools and colleges to use to promote higher education. We are also currently developing a new higher education ‘prospectus’ for pre-16 learners including information and contacts for all Greater Manchester universities. Higher Education Open Days All universities and FE colleges that offer higher education hold open days for prospective students and applicants. These vary between one day events or regular campus tours. Most are open to parents and carers as well as students. Groups or individuals can attend. Note that some events require advance booking. Schools are invited to contact the University to discuss the options. 2 Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester collaborative programme The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University will work together throughout 2011-12 to provide outreach opportunities for pre16 learners in Aimhigher target schools. These opportunities, outlined below, are in addition to the opportunities provided by each of the universities individually for which please see the individual entries. Under a special scheme called Young Applicants in Schools Scheme (YASS), able students aged 16-18 may, by negotiation between the school and the Open University, study selected undergraduate modules alongside their A level or other level 3 courses. RNCM Youth Perform: After school, Musical Theatre group for talented individuals, leading towards public performances within the overall RNCM performance programme. Previous shows have included West Side Story, The Wiz and Little Shop of Horrors as well as involvement in the RNCM production of Carmen. No audition or previous experience required. Musical theme days (e.g. World Music Day, Jazz Day etc.) – programme details to be confirmed Funding and costs Targeted activities – Sound Ideas and the Primary Project - are offered at no charge to schools but schools must pay for any transport and internal staff costs. Other projects may have a small charge attached. Additional activities that may be offered through negotiation with schools/colleges Schools or colleges are invited to approach the RNCM if they have specific ideas for music- based projects. RNCM students are keen to support outreach work. Examples of work that the RNCM undertakes at the request of schools include supporting students working for the Arts Award
