The meaning 'while' can be rendered in Hausa by: Progressive + sai + Relative Completive E.g.: 'Yana cikin tafiya a motarsa, sai ya gamu da 'yan sanda While he was traveling in his car, he met up with the police Suna wasai sai suka ga maciji While they were playing, they saw a snake Tana cikin d'inkin ke nan, sai allurar ta karye She was in the midst of her sewing when the needle broke referring-to-time-' (i) Before sai, can can.be used to mean something like bayan an juma kadan. E. g. Can sai wani fan sandagya nufo Buba After-a while, a policeman came up to Buba Can saki ga Fati ta taho After some time, Fati came (ii) Before other time expressions, can is used to refer to passage of a relatively longer period of time. E.g.: Can. tsakar dare Buba ya taho' It was as late as midnight that Buba arrived Can shekarun baya aka kasha wani jarumi It was many years_ago.that a. certain hero was Zan zo.can cikin damina I will come much later, during the rainy season 3.
