(continued on Page 14) Our Principal’s Message P a g e 2 Greetings to our treasured graduates and friends of Catholic Central (St. Mary’s) High School: As our hearts and minds turn toward the celebration of our 100th anniversary in 2020, our thoughts turn to you, our graduates, as we make plans to position CC for the next generations of students to be formed in the Catholic faith, armed with rigorous, academic knowledge, and steeped in our almost 100 year tradition of excellence. Our thoughts also turn to our founding patronesses, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. These courageous women ventured into the small, rural community of Burlington, Wisconsin with missionary zeal to educate and form the children in this area because they believed in transforming the world through education. Impelled by the Spirit and mission of Jesus, we strive to continue their global vision of a world that can be changed through the individual transformation of young people. Simply stated, the Sisters believed that a K-12 Catholic School System was important for the communities in Southeastern Wisconsin. They understood that students educated in faith would become a productive community of citizens who would be more likely to engage in service to the poor, be more tolerant of cultural diversity, participate in the local government, become business owners, and most importantly, continue in their faith journey by being active members in their parishes. The Sisters are role models for us as we take up their mission for Catholic Central. Now, we must all join together to ensure that Catholic education continues to flourish. We must preserve their charisms and in gratitude for the opportunities that they afforded to so many, we must take up their missionary zeal and contribute to make sure that CCHS is secure for generations to come. We have heard countless stories of Sisters who have inspired our alumni to pursue their dreams. One had a dream to become a teacher, another needed support to attend college, still another needed to be guided as a wayward youth to graduation, and one was even coaxed by a Sister to ask a girl to prom that later became his wife! Every single graduate has a story of how our school shaped and influenced their lives. These lives have, in turn, shaped our community, and yes, they are even transforming the world. Your financial and spiritual support is not only critical to our on-going educational efforts, you are living testimonies of the value of Catholic Education and the charisms that the SSND founded so long ago. A former Catholic school principal once said, “In good times, a Catholic Education is a great opportunity, but in trying times, a Catholic Education is a beacon of hope in a troubled world.” At Catholic Central, we are grateful to you, our alumni, who are our “beacons of hope.” With Topper Pride, Bonnie J. Scholz, NBCT, Principal P a g e 3 Letter from the Athletic Director by Tom Aldrich ‘78 2018-19 was a rewarding year for our athletic teams this past fall and winter. Improvement was seen across all of our fall and winter sports from the previous year. Of particular note was the conference championship and WIAA state championship won by our girls volleyball team! That state championship was the 51st state championship in athletics for our school! It was great to be able to add to our schools outstanding legacy in athletics. The volleyball team was led by Coach Wayne Schultz. This was his first year at the helm of the program for Catholic Central. We are all proud of the results of this season, which was the culmination of a lot of hard work and effort by coach and his staff but most importantly, his athletes! Congratulations to all of them! This spring, excitement is all around, as each of our teams hold high hopes for their upcoming season. We have a head coaching change in softball this year. Longtime coach, Bill Greskiw decided to retire at the end of last year's season. We are grateful for all he has done for our school over the years. We have replaced him with co-head coaches. They are: long time assistant coach, Carol Robers and someone new to our program, Steve Kirst. We were thrilled to find such high quality candidates for the job. Their passion for the girls and the sport of softball is exciting to be around. We wish them much success now and in the years ahead. The growth of our students, both on and off their respective fields of play, has been most impressive this year. I am extremely proud of our coaching staffs and equally impressed and proud of the attitude and effort put forth by our student athletes throughout this school year. Did you know that 25% of our students are three season athletes???? The spirit, pride and tradition of being a “Hilltopper” is alive and well. We are honored and grateful to have student/athletes who are willing to follow in the tradition steeped footsteps, of our alumni! Topper Pride!
