Greetings to our treasured graduates and friends of Catholic Central (St. Mary’s) High School:

As our hearts and minds turn toward the celebration of our 100th anniversary in 2020, our thoughts turn to you, our graduates, as we make plans to position CC for the next generations of students to be formed in the Catholic faith, armed with rigorous, academic knowledge, and steeped in our almost 100 year tradition of excellence.

Our thoughts also turn to our founding patronesses, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. These courageous women ventured into the small, rural community of Burlington, Wisconsin with missionary zeal to educate and form the children in this area because they believed in transforming the world through education. Impelled by the Spirit and mission of Jesus, we strive to continue their global vision of a world that can be changed through the individual transformation of young people.

Simply stated, the Sisters believed that a K-12 Catholic School System was important for the communities in Southeastern Wisconsin. They understood that students educated in faith would become a productive community of citizens who would be more likely to engage in service to the poor, be more tolerant of cultural diversity, participate in the local government, become business owners, and most importantly, continue in their faith journey by being active members in their parishes.

The Sisters are role models for us as we take up their mission for Catholic Central. Now, we must all join together to ensure that Catholic education continues to flourish. We must preserve their charisms and in gratitude for the opportunities that they afforded to so many, we must take up their missionary zeal and contribute to make sure that CCHS is secure for generations to come.

We have heard countless stories of Sisters who have inspired our alumni to pursue their dreams. One had a dream to become a teacher, another needed support to attend college, still another needed to be guided as a wayward youth to graduation, and one was even coaxed by a Sister to ask a girl to prom that later became his wife! Every single graduate has a story of how our school shaped and influenced their lives. These lives have, in turn, shaped our community, and yes, they are even transforming the world.

Your financial and spiritual support is not only critical to our on-going educational efforts, you are living testimonies of the value of Catholic Education and the charisms that the SSND founded so long ago. A former Catholic school principal once said, “In good times, a Catholic Education is a great opportunity, but in trying times, a Catholic Education is a beacon of hope in a troubled world.” At Catholic Central, we are grateful to you, our alumni, who are our “beacons of hope.”

With Topper Pride,

Bonnie J. Scholz, NBCT, Principal

P a g e 3 Letter from the Athletic Director by Tom Aldrich ‘78

2018-19 was a rewarding year for our athletic teams this past fall and winter. Improvement was seen across all of our fall and winter sports from the previous year. Of particular note was the conference championship and WIAA state championship won by our girls volleyball team! That state championship was the 51st state championship in athletics for our school! It was great to be able to add to our schools outstanding legacy in athletics.

The volleyball team was led by Coach Wayne Schultz. This was his first year at the helm of the program for Catholic Central. We are all proud of the results of this season, which was the culmination of a lot of hard work and effort by coach and his staff but most importantly, his athletes! Congratulations to all of them!

This spring, excitement is all around, as each of our teams hold high hopes for their upcoming season. We have a head coaching change in softball this year. Longtime coach, Bill Greskiw decided to retire at the end of last year's season. We are grateful for all he has done for our school over the years. We have replaced him with co-head coaches. They are: long time assistant coach, Carol Robers and someone new to our program, Steve Kirst. We were thrilled to find such high quality candidates for the job. Their passion for the girls and the sport of softball is exciting to be around. We wish them much success now and in the years ahead.

The growth of our students, both on and off their respective fields of play, has been most impressive this year. I am extremely proud of our coaching staffs and equally impressed and proud of the attitude and effort put forth by our student athletes throughout this school year. Did you know that 25% of our students are three season athletes????

The spirit, pride and tradition of being a “Hilltopper” is alive and well. We are honored and grateful to have student/athletes who are willing to follow in the tradition steeped footsteps, of our alumni!

Topper Pride!

Jobe Wagner ‘15 made it on Belgium’s, “The Voice” during the “Blind Auditions” recently. Although his performance wasn’t enough to move on, his rendition of “Sweet Dreams” proved that his musical career is definitely moving in the right direction! Jobe also returned to Catholic Central to play “Seitz” in our spring musical, “Newsies”. (continued on page 14) CCHS Musical “Newsies” by Bonnie Scholz, Principal P a g e 6

This year’s musical production of Newsies was mounted by the Catholic Central Theater Association and proved to be an instant hit with all four performances being nearly sold out! This was the second production of the season which heralds an expansion of our performing arts offerings that not only provide opportunities for our CC students, but also students from our partner parish schools, and adults in the greater community. Under the masterful direction of Ms. Abby Galstad and her expert production team, the breadth and scope of our theater productions have achieved new heights of professional excellence. With the combined efforts of our new band director, Mr. Daniel Hafenstein, and the artistic talents of Ms. Amanda Hoeppner, our visual arts teacher, a bright new era in performing and visual arts has only just begun.

This production’s cast and crew included seniors: Jorie Hayes (Spot Conlon/Bowery Beauty #2/Nun #2). Doug Januszewski (Oscar Delancey), Jillian Kellen (JoJo), Simon Pedone (Romeo), Luke Sassano (Davey Jacobs), Grace Spiegelhoff (run crew) and Miriam Ward (Stage Manager). Also noted, all three of the Sassano children played a role in this year’s musical: Luke Sassano (senior-Davey Jacobs), Mia Sassano (junior-Medda Larkin) and Zoe Sassano (freshman-Newsie).

What makes Newsies so special is the compelling story of a few beleaguered children who dared to stand up to the oppressions of the day. This concept is at the very core of our mission at Catholic Central. While our current students are hardly challenged in the same circumstances as the newsboys, they are taught, (formed in their Catholic Faith, armed with rigorous academic knowledge and steeped in our almost 100 year tradition of excellence), to go into the world and stand up to the oppressions of the day. As you watched them on the stage, you imagined the difference these young men and women will make in the future! In our present condition which divides our nation and our world on so many levels, we hope you enjoyed the efforts of our Catholic Central students sing, “Neighbor, Father to son, one for all and all for one.”

Exciting News!!!!! Catholic Central won nine Jerry Awards for Newsies: Outstanding Lead Performer– Sarah Naber, Outstanding Young Performer-Gary Mann, Outstanding Direction-Abby Galstad, Outstanding Stage Management-Miriam Ward, Outstanding Scenic Design-Steve Wagner, Outstanding Costume Design-Marie Frederick, Karen Melton and Lisa Wagner. The U.S. History Classes Tour Gettysburg for the 14th Consecutive Year

“It is hard to imagine that I have been lucky, blessed, and fortunate enough as an educator that for the last ten years I have taken my US History class out to Gettysburg National Military Park. Over 400 students, over 100 parents have walked the hallowed ground from Catholic Central underneath my leadership. When I sit and reflect on this it is surreal, I would never have guessed while studying in college that I would have this opportunity. The biggest thanks has to go to one of my professional mentors, Dr. Richard Gardiner, who was the US History teacher at Catholic Central when I student taught here back in 2008-2009. It was Dr. Gardiner who started the Gettysburg trip at Catholic Central way back in 2006, which makes the 2019 trip the 14th consecutive trip. I’m not sure when Dr. Gardiner started this trip in 2006 he thought it would last this long, but from discussing with him, it makes both of us so proud about how integrated this trip is not only with the US History class, but with the students’ experience at Catholic Central. Experiential learning is so valuable to education. I can think of no better way to learn history without going to the actual location.

The 2019 trip included 34 students, 14 adults, including myself, and left on March 22nd, 2019. On March 23-24, we traveled to the major locations on the battlefield: McPherson’s Ridge, Oak Hill and Ridge, Culp’s Hill, Cemetery Hill, The Peach Orchard, The Wheatfield, Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, Seminary Ridge, Cemetery Ridge, and the National Cemetery. From there the students and parents listened, asked and answered questions, and were given first hand accounts of the battle from written accounts by soldiers who fought at Gettysburg.”-Dan Meddaugh, History Teacher Math League Back at Catholic Central!

Catholic Central finished a solid 25 among all class schools in the State of Wisconsin due to the resurrection of the league by alum and math teacher, Tom Uhen ’74. Congratulations to our CC Math League participants and Mr. Uhen!
