Acquisition Information Acquired from Pierre de Gigord, 1995-1996. A supplement of 53 photographs, including 16 cartes-de-visite and 12 views of Istanbul by James Robertson, was received as a donation from Gigord in late 1996. Scope and Content of Collection Over 6,000 photographic images form a visual archive of the Ottoman Empire and Republic of Turkey, ca. 1831-1950. The collection focuses on cultural and urban images, mainly of Istanbul, but also of other cities and towns in Turkey, with a few images from Egypt, Greece, and India. The collection is supported by pamphlets and offprints regarding photography in the Ottoman Empire. The collection comprises photographic images in various sizes and formats, including cartes-de-visites, cabinet cards, stereographs, glass plates, and panoramas. Many photographic prints are mounted in albums, others are on loose pages. Photographic techniques include albumens, autochromes, collotypes, ferrotypes, opaltypes, salted paper prints, as well as gelatin silver prints. Photographers include Ali Sami, Hamdi Bey, A. Svoboda, Sébah & Joaillier, Pascal Sébah, Amadeo Preziosi, Abdulluh frères, Apollon (Firm), the Scottish photographer James Robertson, Pierre Trémaux, Ernest de Caranza, the archaologist Jules Delbert, A. de Moustier, and Ferrier, among others.
