In the 90s he worked for a cable TV station, drove Publishing Beseda Holding, with associations to Nova TV. Between 2000-2006 he worked as an editor and presenter of radio station Radio 6, where since 2007 he has served as director. Contact: [email protected] SESSION 1: THE PROGRESS IN DIGITAL RADIO How far has radio succeeded in securing its hybrid future? Moderated by Mats Åkerlund – Chairman of the EBU New Radio Group and head of digital strategy at Swedish Radio. Mats joined Swedish Radio in 1973 as a journalist, and was director of SR's local radio station in Uppsala from 1986 to 1995 and head of the Swedish national radio Channel P3 from 1995 to 2000. SR recently appointed Mats as their coordinator and facilitator to help develop a plan for the implementation of digital radio in Sweden in consultation with public service and commercial radio. Contact: [email protected] 09.15 SCATTERED EUROPE - OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT DIGITAL RADIO MARKET The digital radio landscape between Rome and London, Paris and Warsaw is expanding – but there is still much to be done to ensure a secure hybrid future for radio. Christian Vogg – Head of Radio, EBU (Geneva) Christian Vogg was appointed head of Radio at the EBU in September 2012 after a diverse broadcasting career with WDR. In 2005 he became senior advisor to the director general and was involved in the launch of WDR's digital strategy. He was responsible for the creation of WDR Mediathek – a video and audio portal and became the broadcaster's first meta-data coordinator, connecting WDR's digital projects. It wasn’t always like that though. Find out what ‘Fun Kids’ learned the hard way and how they’ve now found the structure for success. Matt Deegan – Programme Director, ‘Fun Kids’ (UK) Working at the Radio Academy, bidding for FM and digital licences for GWR and then leading strategic projects at Classic FM, XFM and Capital were all warm up for Matt Deegen’s current role as Folder Media’s Creative Director. Folder is a radio and new media consultancy firm with clients including Absolute Radio, UTV and the BBC. They also run 2011’s Sony Digital Radio Station of the Year, Fun Kids. Michael Reichert – Head of Project Office Digital Radio, SWR (Germany) Michael has been with SWR Radio HQ in Baden-Baden since 2007 and is responsible for the coordination of the future radio projects and head of ARD project office. He represents SWR and the ARD network in EBU and RadioDNS working groups. Since July 2011, he's led the Digitalradio project – involving commercial and public radio – with the aim of launching and establishing Digital radio in Germany. Joël Ronez – Head of New Media , Radio France Joël Ronez was appointed Director of New Media in July 2011. In August 2013, Joel Ronez, was given responsibility for the digital development of Le Mouv, the Radio France station for young audiences. Contact: [email protected] 11:00 WRAP UP SESSION 1 11.15 COFFEE BREAK 3/8 SESSION 2: NEW TRENDS –A TECHNICAL APPROACH Digital radio faced in the past two hurdles : it seemed not profitable for smaller (local) stations and the benefit for consumers was “better sound quality” only. Both obstacles are now clearly overcome. Moderated by Laurent Finet, Consultant Coordination and Development, RTBF Laurent’s public service radio career with RTBF began in 1992 as a radio announcer, progressing to head of music. Seven years ago, he was appointed Advisor to the General Director of RTBF on Radio, after leading the broadcaster's transition to digitalization, acting as a pivotal link between engineering and production teams. Laurent is also member of EBU New Radio Group, and a member of the steering Board of RadioDNS Hybrid Radio. Contact: [email protected] 11.40 REGIONAL/ LOCAL DAB+ RADIO: A CHANCE FOR SMALLER STATIONS? Norwegian radio is set on a pathway to becoming all-digital by 2017. What are the prospects for national and local radio? Jarle Ruud – Marketing Manager, Digital Radio Norway Jarle Ruud is marketing manager for Digitalradio Norge, the organisation charged with ensuring a speedy and smooth transition from analogue to digital radio in Norway. His background is consumer electronics. As Nordic product manager for TV in Panasonic, he tracked the transition from analogue to digital TV in several countries, with many parallels to today`s situation in the radio industry. Mathias Coinchon, Senior Project Manager, EBU (Geneva) Prior to EBU, Mathias worked at BBC R&D on DRM and Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG-SSR/RSR) on the re-launch of Digital Radio. He occasionally helps community radio stations and runs a website on open techniques for Digital Broadcasting. He has an M.Sc. degree in communication systems 4/8 engineering from EPFL, Switzerland, and the Eurecom Institute in France. He developed his diploma thesis at BBC R&D on Digital Radio Mondiale. But there is still the challenge to present the possibilities of DAB on a receiver. In 1992 she joined the Institut für Rundfunktechnik and worked in the area of Audio Coding. Since 2006 she has been the General Manager for Onlines Services and Audio. Instead, broadcasters concentrate on a multi-platform strategy for radio, using different kinds of modern media and technology to promote good old radio. He specialises in designing and creating next generation audio experiences and broadcasting systems. Tony is Technical Director of the relaunched Radiophonic Workshop and is a committee member of the Radio Festival and The International Broadcasting Convention.
