The music in itself does not create organisations nor does the musicians themselves necessarily lead the revolution. But the revolutionary/protest music create dreams, visions, fantasies of the revolution and the utopian society that will follow and give a voice to these dreams and to the perception of reality held by the Movement. The aim of this article is to describe the White Noise music, its origins and lyrics, and the role that the music play in the propaganda, and the legal aspects of the music. Screwdriver and Ian Stuart Donaldson "Ian Stuart, I sure miss you mate. Delivered by the Gods, taken by the hand of fate. You were a friend, a comrade, an inspiration to us all, I know for sure, a million men that heeded to your call. To live by your example, and take that long hard road, Unmatched in dedication, and a heart that knew no cold. The last time that we shook our hands, I saw the fire in your eyes, We could have never known right there and then, It would be our last good-bye. So with heart in month and years in eyes, your obituary Ill write, To remember Ian Stuart and to carry on the fight" Farewell Ian Stuart - a tribute by No Remorse Ian Stuart Donaldson died on the 24th of September 1993 from wounds sustained in a car accident. He was the organiser and key figure of the so-called White Noise music, the militant racist music that has become the trademark of the new generation of white racialists around the world. Since his death Ian Stuart Donaldson has become one of the most important heroes for the international racist counterculture. A number of songs, CDs and special issues of various magazines, in tribute to his memory, have been issued, and countless memorial concerts have been held around the world. Ian Stuart Donaldson, was born 1958 in Poulton-le-Fylde near Blackpool in Lancashire. In 1975 he formed a band called Tumbling Dice, named after one of the many hit records by the Rolling Stones, together with a group of friends. The band mostly played cover versions of songs by Stones, The Who and Free in local working men's clubs in the Poulton-le-Fylde and Blackpool area. In 1977 the band changed their name to Skrewdriver. Skrewdrivers first record release came the same year - the single You're so Dumb, released by Chiswick Records. The follow up single - Anti-social - came by the end of the same year. During that period the group changed their punk image in favour of cropped hair. Skrewdriver became a skinhead band. According to Donaldson the decision to become skinheads was motivated by a belief that punk music at the time was becoming too left wing. In 1978, a riot started when Skrewdriver were playing at the Vortex club. The result of the riot was that the band was banned and forced to split up. In 1979 Donaldson formed a political action group called White Noise. The goal of Stuart's organisation was to promote Skrewdrivers philosophy of survival and rebellion. The White Noise group soon forged an alliance with the neo-fascist group British National Front. Between 1983 and 1985, a number of white supremacists bands adopted the heavy metal sound of Skrewdriver, playing in working-class clubs throughout England, East- and West Germany, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, France, Canada, Brazil and Australia. In 1984 Skrewdriver signed a contract with the German record company Rock-O-Rama Records. And in 1985 Stuart and his associates began publication of Blood and Honour. In the late 1980´s Ian Stuart found himself behind bars. In an interview in the Swedish White Power magazine Streetfight he explained why; "I and three of my mates were attacked by eight niggers and when the police came they only arrested us whites. When we were in court the Jewish judge didn't pay any attention to our defence." Apart from his tours and records with Skrewdriver Ian Stuart also recorded a number of solo albums such as The Klansmen, White Diamond and Patriotic Ballads. In the lyrics of Ian Stuart, which is in many ways almost religious, the dreams of ancient powers returning at the end of time to save their people, i.e. the white race strongly comes across as one of the main themes, like in Warlord; "No ones ever going to take away his land Not while he has the power in his hands He appears when his nation is in danger to all our enemies he is the slayer." Donaldsons idea was to exchange boring meetings and endless speeches, with rock concerts with Hitler salutes and National Socialist banners. He created a political platform without party administration, membership cards or administration. In 1988 Ian Stuart wrote the following about his goals; "Our fight begins in Europe and will spread all over the White world. There are certain moments in our lives when we gasp the magnitude of our task. I have walked through Antwerp during the first hours of the night when the nationalists gather at the pubs. The marvellous architecture of the cities of Flandern embodies the soul of Europe - sunset in Rotterdam when the lights of the city glitters and we are made welcome by our friends - an afternoon in Stockholm, frost on the ground and thereafter a journey to Gothenburg were the Swedish and Nordic beauty is hypnotising." The American criminologist Mark Hamm states in his book "American Skinheads" the following concerning the role Ian Stuart Donaldson played; "The emergence of the skinheads as an international youth subculture is largely attributable to the musical talents, political action, business acumen, and good fortune of one Ian Stuart Donaldson". After the death of Ian Stuart Donaldson, a number of memorial concerts have been held and songs dedicated to his memory. Ian Stuart is among movement people around the world surrounded by a rich mythology. The song Suddenly, recorded not long before he died is for instance, by many of the activists, regarded as his farewell - as if he somehow knew he was going to die: "One day if suddenly, I'm forced to take my leave will you still carry on, with the things that we believe? One day is suddenly, they take my life way Will you still be fighting, towards a bright new day?." (Suddenly; by Skrewdriver - from Skrewdriver songbook). From Speaker to Rock Star – White Noise Music "Our people is unknowingly committing a collective suicide, which is part of the trend that has been created by destructive masters with a global influence. A sickening trend, that they daily feed our youngsters with, by MTV and their networks. In order to refute this threat, white youngsters have spontaneously created the Pro-White music movement which is fighting MTV on the same arena with the same weapon....Our musicians are not dapper or drugged rock stars who perform for the sake of their personal profit. They are performing because their rock hard dedication drives them to it. They are the racialists forerunners who preach pride, strength and unity, who teaches our youngsters to think for themselves - instead of letting MTV think for them." "Hoppet om en bättre framtid", Nordland, nr. 3, 1995. A key to the understanding of the racist subculture is the so-called White Noise music. The White Noise music, the concerts, music magazines etc., is in many ways the modern racialist movement, or rather the movement is their media, and the music is the key media - the instrument of propaganda that has enabled the activists to reach out beyond their 'normal' requiting ground and reach a larger number of young people. George Eric Hawthorn, leadsinger of RAHOWA (RAcial HOly WAr) and editor of the American White Noise magazine Resistance, stated in an interview in National Allians, that the very fact that the White Noise music was beside the mainstream, was an attraction in itself and helped the movement to recruit new members and listeners. And Matti Sundquist, the singer of the Swedish White Noise group Swastika explained the role of the music in the following words: "The music is very important, both as entertainment, to keep the flame burning and to recruit people. We have noticed that a lot of people become interested because of the music." In his study of American skinheads, the American criminologist Mark Hamm, analyses the music of Skrewdriver. He describes
