The New Beginnings Pro- gram is the cornerstone of the year 7 transition experience for students entering St Virgil’s College. Director of development Mark Waddington said the foundation for the fully inte- grated program was based on research highlighting that “transition from primary to secondary education has major implications for the learning and social develop- ment of students”. He said in the context of a Catholic boys’ school, noted boys’ educator Ian Lillico identified that boys need to engage with nature, establish a sense of belonging to the school and build relationships with teachers if they were to enjoy a successful transition to the demands of secondary schooling. “Not surprisingly students who experienced a successful transition to secondary school are usually better positioned to overcome the challenges encountered during their later school years,” he said.
