Remember that we are discussing a period before the emergence of recognizable ‘national’ identities in which the tenurial of feudal links between princes and nobles were crucial. The fact that the Plantagenet Kings still held portions of French territory around Bordeaux (the remains of the duchy of Aquitaine) are vital here as is the fact that both Kings were attempting to strengthen their internal jurisdictions. We shall discuss the nature of kingship, government and provincial autonomy in the two countries. This is set against the context of Anglo-French relations under Edward II and Edward III, focusing particularly on the claim of Edward III to the French throne following the death of Charles IV in 1328. The problem of English tenure of Gascony persisted, and in 1337 Philip VI confiscated Edward III’s lands in France. In many ways this was simply a repeat of what had happened in 1294 and 1324, but there was now a new twist since Edward III could claim to be king of France himself Core Reading (6 items) Edward III and the Kingdom of France - J. His "Chronicles", constantly reworked between the 1360s and 1400, though now largely undervalued for their factual content, are vital to an understanding of contemporary views of war.
