In an interview with the Archive of American Television, The Post explained that when he showed the show with Bochco and discussed the music, they decided to abandon the typical hard-driving, street sound that was typical of this kind of show in favor of something more poignant but not too sentimental. This will play the more human aspects of the show, letting the viewer know that there will be a lot of emotion to go along with the scenes of the chase and other police activities. The message went home and wrote the song in the E apartment on this piano in about 30 minutes. When him on the phone to Bochco, they both knew they were the winner. The Hill Street Blues lasted seven seasons on NBC, and the full long version of the song became a hit for the Post when it was released in 1981, during the show's first season. The post prefers to stay away from the spotlight, but he is an credited artist for his instrumental themes, and has three Top 40 hits to his name. In addition to the Hill Street Blues and Rockford Files, he also charted #25 in 1982 with a theme from Magnum P.I.
