Au Revoir, les enfants (1987) PG As World War II rages on, two students at a boarding school, the French-Catholic Julien Quintin (Gaspard Manesse) and the Jewish Jean Bonnet (Raphael Fejto), form an unlikely friendship in director Louis Malle's powerfully moving drama based on events from his own life. Although the boys begin as adversaries, they soon find common ground, especially when it becomes clear that Jean is merely trying to survive the tyranny of the Nazis. 5. Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) PG Cyrano de Bergerac (Gerard Depardieu) pines for his cousin Roxanne, but won't reveal his affections for fear that she'll find his ugly features off- putting. So, Cyrano instructs the studly but stupid Christian how to woo her. Roxanne is entranced by Christian's beautiful poetry and letters -- all ghosted by Cyrano. But Christian dies in battle before he can tell Roxanne the truth. Depardieu won the Best Actor award at Cannes for his performance. 6. Nikita/La Femme Nikita (1990) R Internationally acclaimed director Luc Besson delivers the action-packed story of Nikita (Anne Parillaud), a ruthless street junkie whose killer instincts could make her the perfect weapon. Recruited against her will into a secret government organization, Nikita is broken and transformed into a sexy, sophisticated "lethal weapon." Later remade in the United States as Point of No Return, starring Bridget Fonda. 7. Le Château de ma mère (1990) G This film based on the humorous best-selling memoirs of French novelist and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol highlights the alluring, magical country life of turn-of-the-century Provence. Young Marcel's mother longs for the tranquility of Bastide Neuve after spending a summer holiday there and encourages her family to make the 9-mile trek on foot. They try to shorten the journey by cutting across a private estate, which lands them in a bit of trouble. 8. La Gloire de mon père (1990) G (Sequel to Le Château de Ma Mère) Based on the best-selling memoirs of French novelist and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, this humorous and captivating recollection of a young boy's life in turn-of-the-century southern France focuses on his memorable summer holidays. Thivisol's powerful, haunting performance earned her a Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival in 1996. 11. Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain/Amélie 2001 R Impish gamine Amélie (Audrey Tautou) lives alone and works in a café. When she finds a trove of toys hidden for 40 years behind a baseboard in her apartment, she's inspired to repatriate the items, an impulse of generosity that sparks more benevolent acts. A celebration of life, Amélie reminds us of the small wonders that abound around us … if only we paused to look. 12.
