COURSE OUTLINE : THRT 005B Last Revised and Approved: 12/10/2014 CURRICULUM Subject Code and Course Number: THRT 005B Division : Performing and Communication Arts Course Title : THEATRE HISTORY II Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal To align course with C-id it is necessary to split the scope of THRT 5 into 2 separate classes as follows: THRT 5a Theatre History from Ancient Greece to 1660 (revision of a previously inactivated course) and THRT 5b Theatre History from 1660 to Present Day. (revision of a previously inactivated course) SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) 1. Identify and describe major theatrical eras and the major playwrights, actors, and styles of theatrical architecture and production from 1660 to the present day. 2. Synthesize the importance of social, political and religious characteristics as they influence artistic and theatrical development across eras and cultures. 3. Discuss and explain major theories of production and performance from 1660 to the Contemporary era, and apply that understanding the analysis of texts and performances. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1a. Critique and evaluate the historical, artistic, social and philosophical environments in which theatre exists. 1b. Outline the historical development of theatre from 1660 through the present day. 2a. Compile evidence illustrating how the relationship between the audience and theatre artist has changed over time. 2b. Analyze the role of the theatre arts and its relationship to other parts of society. 2c. Confirm the value and necessity of theatre arts in culture and society 2d. Read and analyze a given play. Discuss character development. Keep in mind the Political, Economic Religious and Social movements of the period and relate your character analysis to what was occurring historically during the period. 2. Read and analyze a given play. Write a 5-page term paper explaining the political and historical significance of the play. Relate the paper to what was occurring historically during the time period in which the play was written. History and development of theatre and drama in relationship to cultural, political and social conditions of the time.
