Kongsberg Maritime delivers technology solutions for positioning, surveying, navigation and automation of merchant vessels and offshore installations. Project K-Tools Kongsberg Maritime provides technology solutions for vessel navigation, automation, and decision support. Each vessel, from container ship and tanker to cruise ferry and mega yacht, requires a different set of technologies. Quoting potential customers—and generating project documentation in response to their RFPs—is a resource- and time-intensive task. To quote a customer, Kongsberg Maritime is required to generate 50 document types and a total of 2,000 pages. The information is stored in various IT systems not integrated with one another. Before “K-Tools,” the engineer-to-order process took Kongsberg Maritime as much as 2 person-months. For Kongsberg Maritime, ICB developed “K-Tools,” a solution for automatic generation of documentation. The solution connects to Kongsberg Maritime’s ERP system and uses a rule engine to generate documents in various formats (.DOC, .XLS, .PDF, .HTML, .XML, .MDB, and .DWG). The system deploys the generated project documents to a DMS, which handles the workflow process for revision and approval. Project Malware Protection System How do you protect a ship’s critical control systems when they are not allowed to have antivirus programs installed? On a vessel, the antivirus program can create serious issues if it steals critical processing power away during operations. Hence why it is not allowed. So how do you keep a vessel’s control systems safe from malicious software? Kongsberg Maritime chose ICB to help it solve that challenge. With Malware Protection System (MPS), that challenge was solved. MPS is a portable scan engine for network and USB protection against malicious software. The system scans files, using Bit Defender, on a network drive or USB stick—and creates a digital signature on files that were marked safe. Only files with that digital signature can then be recognized by the vessel’s control systems. Meaning that viruses and malicious code, present or not, is kept away from critical control systems equipment. Since completion of the first phase of the project with ICB, Kongsberg Maritime is planning to roll out thousands of MPS-powered portable scanners.
