Student Information Booklet 2021 Dear Students We are so excited to be moving into our new building in September 2021. This information leaflet is designed to introduce you to some key aspects of the building and our move. As you will have seen from our monthly updates, the building development is making great progress and our first group of student building ambassadors are visiting the site this term. Whilst our new building is a fantastic opportunity it is also a huge responsibility and there is some key information in this booklet that should help make our move as smooth as possible. Please do take some time to read through this information with your form tutor and parents. With our new site there will be changes for everyone to get used to. We hope that this guide helps with any questions you may have and any planning you may have to do with travel arrangements. Each form group has two building ambassador that will be your key contact with all aspects relating to the building. They will be there to support you but also remember that all staff are always here to help you with all aspects of school life. For many of you, this new building has felt like a long wait. I also thank you for your patience and encouragement over the years. Whilst we know that an increasing number of students will be travelling by foot, we have planned the details for each method, including all bus routes in order to help you with your planning. If you are travelling by car, please note that there will be some adjustments to the junction with Uttoxeter Road and Great Northern Road in order to help ease the traffic flow. By Car: Parents/Carers are able to drop students off at Derby Cathedral School by approaching the school building. We operate a one-way traffic system managed by a turning circle up the driveway. There is a designated drop off/collection point for students arriving by car. Please note there are no waiting bays and so we ask that you exit the school site as soon as possible, in order to keep the flow of traffic moving and ensure the safety of pedestrians. We also ask that parents are mindful of local residents when arriving at school and do not block or obstruct our neighbours’ driveways and frontages with their vehicles. Our postcode for sat navs is DE1 1LR. By Bicycle: We have bicycle racks for students wishing to cycle to school. Students are required to bring their own security/locking device and must wear a cycle helmet. Please be aware we are not liable for any loss or damage to pushbikes brought on to the school premises and that e-scooters remain illegal and are not allowed on site at all. Term Dates In order to facilitate our move we have been granted some additional INSET days in order to pack, move and organise the new build. We have kept these to a minimum and attached them to either side of the summer holiday in order to reduce the impact for families. We aim to take one INSET day on Thursday 22 July and a further two on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 September. This means that the final day of this academic year will be Wednesday 21 July and all students will return to school on Wednesday 8 September 2021. Term dates for the whole academic year can be found on our school website under the Information tab: https://www.derbycathedralschool.org.uk/termdates Timings of the School Day The new timings of the school day are shown below. Please note that this assumes we do not have to operate with any Covid related restrictions. If any changes are needed we will communicate this to you and parents as soon as we have the information. *The seventh session will include intervention and extra-curricular activities. Students will not be expected to attend this every day but this will sometimes be needed for intervention or support. Some activities will be by invitation and some will be by student personal choice. The school gates will be open from 8.15am for breakfast club. This club will not be available in the first week as we adjust to the new building and facilities. We will provide more details nearer to the time. The site will not be open to any students before 8.15am and we ask that for those not attending breakfast club, they arrive as close as possible to 8.35am. Induction Working within our new building will take a little while for everyone to get used to.
