Report of the Secretary for the period from 14th July 2017 to 31st May 2018 Respected President Shri. K A Ajayan, Founder President Dr. V.K.S. Menon, Senior Vice President, Shri. K.T. Thomas, Vice Presidents Shri. M A Mehaboob and Dr. Saji Kuriakose, Treasurer CA. Ramakrishnan V, Joint Secretary Mr. Asif T, Past Presidents of CMA and dear members of CMA. It is indeed a pleasure to present before this august gathering, the report on the various activities of the CMA during the period from JULY 2017 to MAY 2018. The year under review saw CMA spreading its influence into different fields, like joining hands with institutions, industries and conducting series of Lecture Sessions, In-house sessions as well as Seminars. CMA has received the privilege of being an active organization among the local bodies by its active contribution and participation in all the forums. The year 2017-18 was very eventful with more than half a century programs by CMA. The programmes conducted under the able guidance of our President Shri. K A Ajayan received excellent participation, appreciation and laurels throughout this term. CMA focused on developing an ecosystem for growth for entrepreneurship and startups especially in the areas of IT and Tourism. In addition to regular lecture sessions and in-house presentations, study tours etc, CMA organised training sessions for Police Officers, NCC Cadets, Auto, bus and taxi drivers in the city, SSI sector, NGOs, College Students etc. CMA has structured and finalised the guidelines for a new award in a year for the best social entrepreneur. VKC Group of Kozhikode has come forward to associate as the permanent sponsor for the award and is "CMA-VKC Best Social Entrepreneur Award". This is in addition to the existing Annual Awards of CMA i.e Management Leadership Excellence Award, CMA-C.K. Prahalad Award for Institutional Excellence, Young Manager Award, Young Entrepreneur Award and Woman Entrepreneur Award. CMA actively participated in the AMCs of various LMAs in Kerala and the 1st All Kerala LMA Meet organised at Cochin, LMA meets organised by VMA and TMA and National Leadership Conclave by AIMA at New Delhi. It is great pride and privilege to inform that CMA is approved as a registered member of Startup Community Partner Development Programme of Kerala Start Up Mission (KSUM), a Govt of Kerala Initiative. The media coverage received on various occasions also indicated that our entrepreneurship and leadership programmes were considered relevant by the public at large. Moving on to fulfil my duty as the Secretary of CMA, let me hereby share with you the details of the various programs and activities conducted during this term by the collective effort of current Office Bearers and the whole-hearted support of the Managing Committee. PROGRAMMES Installation Ceremony of CMA Office bearers The installation ceremony of the President and Office bearers of the Calicut Management Association for the year 2017-18 was done on 14th July 2017 in the august presence of Dr. Venu V, IAS, Principal Secretary (Tourism), Govt.of Kerala. The Keynote address was delivered by Prof. Keyoor Purani, Executive Director, IIMK-LIVE at Hotel Malabar Palace, Kozhikode. Shri. K. A. Ajayan - President, Shri Anil Balan - Secretary, Shri. K T Thomas - Sr. Vice President, Shri. Mehboob A – Vice President, Dr. Saji Kuriakose – Vice President, Shri. Asif T – Jt. Secretary and CA. Ramakrishnan V – Treasurer are office bearers who took over the charge for the year 2017-18. Dr. Venu spoke about the ‘potential’ that exists in tourism sector with respect to Kerala Tourism and Calicut in particular. The readiness to invest in tourism projects and the patience to nurture was not visible in the investors from Calicut which is not the case as in Wayanad. He said, CMA should intervene and study the problems that exists in this sector and help out investors to be more professional and mentor them to withstand pressure and be successful. Professor Keyoor Purani said, it is again the lack of professional approach which has caused the slow growth of tourism in Calicut. The economy which is largely depended on foreign remittance has created large number of spoiled children who wants to live in the comforts of remittance. There should be a change to this attitude. CMA has got a big role to play in changing the attitude in doing business that would thus bring more investment in Tourism sector. Interactive Meeting – Discussion on “Draft Industrial & Commercial Policy 2017”, Govt. of Kerala Date: 10th July 2017 Venue: Hotel Hyson Heritage, Kozhikode Host: Sri. A.C.Moideen, Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Kerala The Hon’ble Minister for Industries, Sports and Youth Affairs, Sri. A. C. Moideen chaired an interactive meeting to discuss in details on the draft Industrial & Commercial Policy 2017 with the industrialists and associations in the Northern Districts. Mr. K. A. Ajayan – President and Mr. Anil Balan – Secretary of Calicut Management Association represented and participated in the discussion. In-House Session on “Blue Ocean Strategy” Date: 22nd July 2017 Venue: CMA Hall, CMA Office, Peekay Complex, Kozhikode Speaker: Shri. Rishikesh, Assistant Professor – Christ University, Bangalore The speaker – Sri. Rishikesh spoke on “How to create uncontested market and make competition irrelevant, Blue Oceans are associated with high potential profits. The session was very interesting and gave good insights to the members. In-House Lecture on “Digital Transformation – A Roadmap to Growth” Date: 27th July 2017 Venue: Hotel Malabar Palace, Kozhikode Speaker: Sri. Anil Balan, Secretary – CMA, IT Entrepreneur The speaker Sri. Anil Balan spoke on “Digital Transformation” in the context of India and World, shared the key objectives that are enabler for Digital Transformation. He emphasised on how organizations can drive digital transformation and the steps required by leadership team to achieve it which is strategic and not tactical. The session was interactive with overwhelming discussion around how digital world is steering the business drivers. Lecture Session on “Establishing a University : Challenges & Satisfaction” Date: 27th July 2017 Venue: Hotel Malabar Palace, Kozhikode Speaker: Sri. K Jayakumar (IAS), Founding Vice-Chancellor, Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Tirur The speaker – Sri. K. Jayakumar shared his experience of setting up a Malayalam University and spoke about four factors that any entrepreneur should consider: 1. Social/Local Environment, 2. Political Environment, 3. Administrative Environment 4. Academic Environment. CMA Members got an opportunity to interact, discuss and understand management skills as well as techniques to define strategy and find solutions to all the challenges that may arise during the implementation of projects of such a scale. Session was well received by all the CMA members and invited guests. CMA partners with Ernst & Young (E&Y) for Ideathon 2017 Ideathon 2017, a unique 2-month event to foster the spirit of innovation and love for code development by building prototypes around emerging frontiers in technology. The event will be organized by KEY Accelerator in collaboration with the Kerala Start Up Mission, Ernst and Young, Calicut Management Association and other important stakeholders of Calicut. The first major edition to be organized at Calicut. The themes and the problem statements for the Ideathon to be decided in Ideathon 2017 – CMA, E&Y and Stakeholders in a meeting consultation with the partners and collaborators and the best performing teams to be suitably rewarded and the top teams to be given the opportunity to participate in the 6 month acceleration program at KEY Calicut/IIM Live. A meeting was conducted at UL Cyberpark, Kozhikode with participation of all the key stakeholders. Mr. K.A. Ajayan, President and Mr. Anil Balan, Secretary, participated in the meeting Coffee Table Discussion – “Revisiting the Trade Heritage of Kozhikode Date: 22nd August 2017 Venue: Merchant Navy Club, Near Light House, Beach Road, Kozhikode Co-Host: Merchant Navy Club, Calicut The renowned historian Prof. M. G. S. Narayanan spoke on the trade heritage of Kozhikode, the city of truth, the home of the famous medieval Calico textiles, the city of hospitality, food and many more. Prof MGS also enlightened the rich trade history of the Kingdom of Kozhikode, ruled by the Zamorin Raja, giving insights into Portugese, French, Chinese, British and Arab trade with the city, the visits of Vasco da Gama and Marco Polo. The stories of Silk street, Gujarati street, SM street, Gunny street, Copra Bazaar, Valiyanagadi, Hajur Kachery, the once flourishing Calicut seaport, horse-trading centers of Kozhikode, timber trade, Kannanchery street of weavers , Pattemari or Uru, the iron screw-pile piers and much more. The programme was organised by CMA for Businessmen, Entrepreneurs, Start-ups and Prof. M.G. S Narayanan at Coffee Table Discussion with CMA Students from B Schools who would like to know more about the heritage and history of Kozhikode - Knowing the city, its culture and trade heritage is a must for any entrepreneur – in the present and future. Mr. K. A. Ajayan, President - CMA, Capt. Aswini Pratap, Chairman - MNC, Capt. Haridas.K.K, President – MNC, CMA Past Presidents and CMA Members participated in the discussion which was very informative. A Complete Training Programme – “NEVER GIVE UP – REVIVE” Date: 18th August 2017 Venue: Hotel Woodies, Kallai Road, Kozhikode Speaker: Shri. Madhu Bhaskaran, HRD Trainer & Motivational Speaker Topic: Leadership Excellence Speaker: Shri. C. P. Shihabudheen, Motivational Speaker Topic: How to find happiness in Life Speaker: Shri. Praveen Chirayath, Corporate Trainer Topic: Confidence Conquers the world Expose Infotech Pvt. Ltd. In association with Calicut Management Association conducted a training programme - NEVER GIVE UP – REVIVE. It has received excellent response with more than 200 participants.
