COURSE OUTLINE : KINA 065A Last Revised and Approved: 06/02/2008 CURRICULUM Subject Code and Course Number: KINA 065A Division : Kinesiology Health and Athletics Course Title : BEGINNING BASKETBALL Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) A. Identify and apply the three (3) basic fundamental skills of basketball. B. Demonstrate and apply the basic fundamental skills in a triple threat position, passing, dribbling, shooting, and maneuvering speed. C. Demonstrated stretching and warm-up exercises, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning used in basketball. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1. Provide an opportunity for mastery of fundamental skills with an opportunity to become competitively effective. 2. Provide knowledge of the game enabling the student to enjoy basketball intelligently as a player and as a spectator. 3. Understand the basic rules, changes and interpretations and duties of the officials. 4. Demonstrate techniques and fundamentals shooting baskets. 5. Demonstrate correct hand position for the shots: one hand push shot, two hand push shot, one hand jump shot, hook shot, lay-out shot and free throw. 6. Demonstrate proper passing techniques and fundamentals passing proper balance and body movements with correct hand position for such passes as baseball pass, two hand push pass, two hand over- head pass, and hand-off (quarterback) pass. 7. Demonstrate correct body balance and hand position when dribbling against a defender, for speed and for a jump shot. 8. Demonstrate the proper position for the hands and fingers when catching the ball as a result of a pass, rebound or an inter- ception. Individual defense - the proper balance and movements of the hands and arms, legs, feet and body in: 1. Guarding a player without ball. 2. Guarding a man with the ball. F. Rebounding - correct techniques on obtaining possession and jumping for the ball while on: 1. Defense. 2. Offense. III. Team play...strategy and tactics. A. Offense - movement of team and player with ball in their possession: 1. Movement with the ball. 5. Against a player to player 2. Movement without the ball. defense. 3. Set plays. 6. Methods of Instruction This course will require various skill sets students will learn through active participation. Demonstrations, visualizations and instructor feedback will be used throughout the semester to ensure student’s comprehension. Small group discussions, peer review, and mini lectures that are skill specific. Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance Students will be evaluated through active participation, demonstration of proper techniques as well as comprehension of basic terminology exams. Assignments Demonstrate to the class basic warm-up drills in class and explain the importance of using the drills specific to beginning basketball.
