CONCORD FENCING CLUB CLASS NOTES ETUDE DE FER #1 – DIRECT SEQUENCE Paired Drills – Epee II students assist Epee I Repeat each of the following 3-4 times successfully, then switch roles, then progress to the next drill. 0) Direct Attack - with Advance-Lunge a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the inside-high (IH) line on the advance (with rear foot); b. Fencer B retreats without parry or counterattack c. Fencer A continues with a lunge to hit the wrist (or elbow; experiment with distance) 1) Feint-Continue - with Advance-Lunge a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the (IH) line on the advance (with front foot); b. Fencer B retreats without parry or counterattack c. Fencer A completes advance-lunge to hit the wrist (or elbow; experiment with distance) 2) Feint-Disengage, Lateral - with Advance-Lunge a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the (IH) line on the advance (with front foot); b. Fencer B retreats and makes a parry 4 c. Fencer A lunges with an indirect thrust to hit the wrist (or elbow) 3) Feint-Disengage, Vertical - with Advance-Lunge a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the (IH) line on the advance (with front foot); b. Fencer B retreats and makes a parry 4 c. Fencer A lunges with an indirect thrust to hit the thigh or flank 4) Feint-Beat - with Advance-Lunge a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the (IH) line on the advance (with front foot); b. Fencer B retreats and extends, making a counterattack inside c. Fencer A executes a beat in 4 (with rear foot) and lunges to hit the wrist 5) Feint-Prise de Fer - with Advance-Flèche a. Fencer A makes a thrust to the (IH) line on the advance (with front foot); b. Fencer B retreats and extends, making a counterattack inside c. Fencer A takes the blade in 6 (with rear foot) and flèches to hit the shoulder or chest d. (Fencer A runs past; Fencer B turns around; both come on guard and resume.) Advanced Drills – Epee II I. Repeat selected drills from above with various initial lines: a. Begin with a feint in the outside-high, outside-low, or inside-low line II. Decision Drills based on selected drills above: a. E.g. Between (2) and (4) or between (3) and (5) b. Sequence: Blocked drills (as above), Alternating, then Random .
